Today, we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. Like many other companies, we depend on nature to carry out our business, particularly in terms of natural resources. This means that it is essential for the Group to control its impact from the product life cycle, starting in the design phase.   We formalized our commitment to biodiversity by joining the act4nature international initiative in 2018 to reduce the pressure generated by our activities, throughout our value chain. Because it is urgent to take action to combat biodiversity loss, and aware of our company’s role in integrating the preservation of nature into its strategy, we have decided to strengthen our objectives for 2030.   Playing a leading role for a more sustainable natural rubber industry with a zero-deforestation commitment since 2015, we are moving one step further with 100% of the natural rubber volumes used by the Group assessed as deforestation-free while at the same time reducing the pesticides used for rubber tree cultivation in our own operations and joint-ventures.   Above and beyond our own activities and initiatives, we believe that finding a harmonious balance between social, economic, and environmental issues is critical to safeguarding the planet’s future. One of the trends to note at the moment is the increasing interest in a transition to a circular bioeconomy, as we shift away from a fossil fuel based economy. The challenge will be doing so in a way that doesn’t put more pressure on nature but works with forests, wetlands, grasslands etc, as well as enhancing nature in farmland through agroforestry techniques. Additionally we need to think about how to ensure local people living in the area gain from the growing bioeconomy, and are engaged in the process utilising their knowledge and skills. Before I read this piece, I didn't know that the Biodiversity Credit Alliance existed; the more I dug into their work, the more excited I become about the future possibilities for businesses to fund and accelerate the critical work around preserving, expanding, and connecting biodiverse areas.
