A new plan aimed at protecting and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems was presented at the House of Commons yesterday. Business leaders and ESG professionals in charge of horizon planning for their ESG initiatives may find my blog outlining 5 take-aways from the plan of interest. Here is an even shorter summary: - Only 1% of global climate finance is spent on the ocean - Marine ecosystems are under pressure - Marine natural capital has an approximate asset value of £211 billion in the UK alone, and none of us can afford for it to be compromised - There is a new exciting plan to address that, by establishing Marine Natural Capital Markets - Businesses don't need to wait for it to be implemented, they can support marine ecosystems now. Despite the number of projects worldwide aimed at reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+), clear evidence on their effectiveness is hard to come by. By hosting and updating the largest and freely downloadable global database of REDD+ projects (ID-RECCO) – which has been accessed by more than 193,000 users globally – CIFOR-ICRAF is filling information gaps on carbon certification, sources of financing, benefit-sharing mechanisms, buyers and sellers, and community-level interventions. The database also provides real-time monitoring of #REDD+ on the ground and assesses how REDD+ projects can contribute to Paris Agreement goals.
