🇽🇰 Kosovo holds a special place in my heart and in fact my career in international development started in the small city of Prishtina (but that’s a story for another post). 😊 I was therefore overjoyed to have been invited to share my work, journey and progress as a social entrepreneur in the water and sanitation sector at the Aquainnovate conference organised by the Young Water Professionals Kosovo Chapter. The conference itself was well-organized and I was super impressed by some of the data-monitoring and water efficiency solutions shared by the region’s young minds. During the panel discussion, I was asked what my recommendations for young water professionals would be and I’d like to share two key thoughts: 1. Innovation doesn’t always mean technological innovations, we need to be innovating on all the moving parts from a holistic and zoomed out point of view. 2. I’d like for us, as young professionals in the sector, to stop the practice of attending conferences only to present the same challenges in a different format in subsequent ones. We can change the trajectory simply by making sure we are effectively following up on the ideas shared all the way to implementation stage. The Organized Private Sector in WASH is committed to supporting the young water professionals going forward and I can’t wait to reconnect with everyone when I am back in Prishtina. The sector's lead European organisations are sounding the alarm: faced with the re-emergence of late blight, European potato production is at risk❗️ The call for action plan encourages a short-term strategy that includes: "Using effective, validated, and efficient on-farm Decision Support Systems (DSS) including flexible spray recommendations for interval and dose rates depending on disease pressure." I also believe a robust DSS is an indispensable way to an effective anti-resistance strategy for long lasting powerful fungicide MoA and avoiding a premature decline in R- gene efficacy! #digital_farming #agriculture #science #plant_pathology #fungicide_resistance #decision_support_systems

📌 Speaking at an UNCTAD workshop on building resilience through #SouthSouth cooperation and targeted policy strategies, UNOSSC Director Dima Al-Khatib highlighted the role of South-South and #TriangularCooperation in addressing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States. South-South and triangular cooperation, including SIDS-SIDS cooperation can play an important role in building economic resilience. South-South cooperation can also play a role in mobilizing resources and harness science, technology and innovation to accelerate progress. For example, in #CaboVerde, FAO, with the support of #China is strengthening capacity of agricultural production systems to enhance food and nutrition security in the country through South-South and triangular cooperation.

Quote: Developing a coordinated approach from the crop protection sector and breeders. THE MOST EFFECTIVE way to control the spread of late blight is the combined use of effective plant protection products and resistant potato varieties with combinations of different resistance genes. Mentioned as a mind-term solution, but already possible, highly necessary to scale up much much faster.

Migration impacts forests significantly, potentially causing deforestation and biodiversity loss as people settle. Yet, it can also relieve pressure on forests and bring sustainable practices. Ensuring a positive impact involves promoting sustainable development, conservation education, and integrating eco-friendly practices into both urban and rural planning. Balancing human needs with environmental preservation is key.
