🌍 Last week, the EU Commission President unveiled the much-anticipated Commissioner nominations, setting the agenda for the next five years. However, we are concerned about a significant shift: the Equality portfolio has been merged with Crisis Management and Preparedness. 🚨 This change raises alarm bells that equality issues may be overshadowed by urgent crisis responses. We fear that vital equality initiatives will be sidelined. 💬 Our Policy Officer, Farah Abdi outlined the issue. Farah said: “This shift shows a worrying disconnect between equality and key areas like democracy and justice, sidelining protections for LGBTI people, especially trans refugees, who face heightened risks to their fundamental rights. Without committing to a strong legislative push, the renewed LGBTIQ Equality Strategy risks further marginalisation at a critical time.” 💔 After reflecting on this disappointing news, we joined forces with other civil society organisations to issue an open letter. Together, we are advocating for equality to be prioritised alongside crisis management. 📣 We call on the Commission to ensure that equality is at the forefront of their agenda and that strong policies are developed to protect the most vulnerable people across Europe. 📖 Read the Open Letter on our website: https://lnkd.in/dBdeJHhj #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights

Gender and Child Affairs in the Office of the Prime Minister is also tasked with leading the National Policy on Gender and Development which recognises youth as a special interest group and the National Child Policy. Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty require greater youth participation and leadership. Yet, it calls for something more far-reaching in the paradigm of development. In our context, young women under the age of 35 are disproportionately the victims of sexual violence. The National Strategic Action Plan on Gender-based Violence and Sexual Violence, 2023-2027 includes youth engagement for a peaceful present and future in T&T. The Youth-Child-Gender Nexus of Development is a recognition that all social and economic development is premised on what we invest in youth and children. The protection of human rights, elderly care, menstrual equity, quality education and healthy social attitudes begin with youth and children. Youth and children are not just beneficiaries or decision-makers in development – rather, they are an essential category for investment to construct national development and the quality of life in national development and the global community. https://lnkd.in/eusmsrYd

Guardians of Dignity: The Imperative Role of Human Rights Practitioners The world hadn't recovered from the massive human rights violations that occurred in 2022. In 2023, the world remained entrenched in a distressing landscape of human rights crises that highlighted a spectrum of systematic abuses, conflicts, and ideological struggles. These challenges persisted from the unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the tragic mass killings at Yemen's border and Ethiopia's alarming internal violations, each amplifying the urgent need for international intervention, justice, and protection. Additionally, the atrocities by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels intensified the humanitarian crisis, underlining the necessity for swift action and accountability. Simultaneously, instances such as Saudi Arabia's stringent restrictions on freedom of expression, heated debates over abortion rights in the United States, Uganda's passage of a regressive anti-LGBTQ+ law, and Iran's ongoing struggles in advancing women's rights continued to spotlight the critical need for global attention and unified efforts against these persistent injustices. Amid the outcry, protests became a visible response, reflecting public outrage and demanding immediate rectification of these severe human rights breaches. Yet, beyond these demonstrations lies human rights workers' and activists' steadfast, comprehensive efforts. Human rights work encompasses multifaceted approaches involving advocacy, legal aid, grassroots initiatives, and policy amendments, aiming to address the underlying causes and systemic issues fueling these violations. Proactive measures, anchored by the research community, fieldworkers, and policymakers, stand as critical tools in averting human rights violations before they occur. Researchers meticulously analyze patterns, identifying risk factors and proposing preventive measures based on historical contexts and social dynamics. Fieldworkers and activists working closely with affected communities play a crucial role in understanding local contexts, fostering dialogue, and building trust. Collaboration among human rights organizations, governments, and international bodies is essential in crafting preventive policies, legal frameworks, and early warning mechanisms to fortify human rights standards. As 2024 approaches, hope resides in a collective vision for reduced instances of human rights violations and amplified support for the valiant efforts of human rights workers and researchers. Strengthening these endeavors through increased employment, funding, and recognition is pivotal in nurturing a world where human dignity is revered, equality is safeguarded, and justice prevails. #PreventingHumanRightsViolations #BuildingGlobalJustice #HumanRightsAdvocacy #ResearchForPrevention #EqualityForAll #GlobalResponsibility #AdvocateForChange

October 4th is the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and & Gender Diverse People (MMIW+GDP). This day is marked to critically think about the actions we can take to support the search for MMIW+GDP. This requires support from non-Indigenous Allies to address the ongoing of colonial harm towards Indigenous people. Indigenous communities, families, and individuals grieve the loss of Mothers, Daughters, Aunties, Sisters, Cousins, Daughters and Friends. In Canada, Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people are 12 times more likely to go missing or to be murdered than non-Indigenous women and girls (Government of Canada, 2024). This urgent problem requires action and intervention at the individual, community, and all levels of the government in Canada. Your help is needed as this work cannot be done alone. Please think about how you can work towards Allyship with Indigenous people to help end gender-based violence in Canada! Nia:wen Kowa! Thank you! -------------- #MMIWG #MMIWGDP #RedDressDay #IndigenousRights #TruthAndReconciliation

Women’s rights organizations in Ukraine and throughout the region mobilized rapidly in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Two years later, they continue to provide a vital yet increasingly frayed lifeline to millions of displaced women and children. VOICE and HIAS's latest report highlights how a lack of adequate resourcing and support has put immense pressure on many women’s rights organizations, many of whom are concerned about their capacity to continue supporting women and vulnerable populations from their communities in addition to those displaced by the war. Over 50% of respondent organisations say that a critical lack of funding and resources threatens vital programs and services for displaced women and girls such as: - Adequate Housing - Economic Support and Opportunities - Gender-Based Violence Services - Counselling - Legal Advice Read the full report 👇 https://lnkd.in/e8USGwUG #ukraine #displacement #refugees #gbv #gbvprotection #women #internationalwomensday #mentalhealth #mhpss
