A very timely insight on why Random planting of mangroves is bound to fail as a restoration measure. Sustainable restoration requires careful study of the environment in which the replantation processes are being initiated.

One of the 1st things I learned in my job at Wetlands International is that mangrove restoration is not the same as planting a bunch of trees and hoping for the best. Like all ecosystems mangroves are complex and the conditions need to be just right for restoration to be successful. Want to know more about how restoration can work, check out the video below.

‼️ Many mangrove restoration projects jump straight into planting Rhizophora sp., a mid- and low-mid mangrove species, in the wrong spots. This often fails or, at best, produces stunted mangroves. A focus on tree planting can divert from the priority: to conserve & protect what we have. It can take 15-20 years for a newly created mangrove forest to reach an equivalent maturity. 🌱 Successful restoration relies on creating the right conditions for mangroves to regenerate naturally.
