As we mark International Women's Day this year with the theme 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress', AME recognizes the invaluable contributions of women in the mineral exploration, development, and mining sectors. Their dedication, expertise, and diverse perspectives are essential for shaping a future of safe and socially responsible mining practices. Investing in women is investing our industry’s future. While strides have been made, we acknowledge that there is still progress to be made in creating a truly inclusive environment for women in mineral exploration and mining. The International Day of Women in Mining is more than just a day or an event - it is a global call to action! This annual campaign underscores the importance of gender diversity, equity, and inclusion in the mining sector, highlighting the contributions of all who identify as women and the need for a more inclusive industry. This year’s theme ‘I am mining and I belong’ calls on all of us to reflect on what belonging in mining means to each of us and how we can reinforce it every day. Belonging goes beyond mere representation; it encompasses feeling valued, respected, and integral to the industry's success. It’s about ensuring that every voice is heard, every talent is recognised, and every individual feels a sense of ownership and pride in their work. Reflect on the dialogues we can initiate and sustain in our workplaces to nurture a more inclusive environment. These conversations are vital in breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a culture of acceptance and support. Whether through formal discussions, casual conversations, or structured programmes, we have the power to drive change from within. Consider the concrete actions and behaviours we can pledge to adopt. This might include mentoring programmes, diversity training sessions, inclusive hiring practices, and creating safe spaces for open dialogue. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant change over time. For example, we can make a conscious effort to include diverse perspectives in decision-making processes, recognise and celebrate the achievements of all employees, and provide equal opportunities for career advancement. What actions or behaviours are you pledging to adopt after today to make this vision a reality? Perhaps you will commit to mentoring a young woman in mining, advocating for policy changes within your organisation, or simply being a more active ally. Every action counts, and together, we can create a ripple effect that transforms the industry. By embracing diversity and fostering a culture of belonging, we not only enhance our workplaces but also drive innovation, productivity, and overall success. Together, we can make a significant impact and ensure that the mining industry is a place where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and feel that they truly belong. #IDWIM #IDWIM2024 #InternationalDayofWomeninMining #IAmMiningAndIBelong #IAmMining #SoyMinería #JeSuisLactivitéMinière #SouMineração #WomenInMining #MiningIndustry

I am a professional administrator who is passionate about governance, compliance in corporate and in the legal profession.
Expanding on the the benefits on having women in Corporate Governance in the mining sector. - Benefits of diversity: Studies have shown that diverse boards and executive teams lead to better decision-making, improved financial performance, and enhanced reputation. - Challenges faced by women: Women in mining often face stereotypes, bias, and barriers to advancement, including limited access to networking opportunities, mentorship, and sponsorship. - Initiatives for change: Organizations such as Women in Mining (WIM) and the International Women in Mining Alliance (IWIMA) are working to increase representation, provide support, and promote gender equality in the industry. - Best practices: Companies can adopt best practices such as setting diversity targets, providing training and development programs, and creating inclusive cultures to attract and retain female talent. - Case studies: There are successful examples of women in leadership positions in mining, such as Jacqueline Himsworth, CEO of Anglo American's copper business, and Elizabeth Collins, non-executive director at Glencore. - ESG considerations: Women's participation in governance can also enhance ESG outcomes, as they often bring a stronger focus on social and environmental responsibility. What other benefits would you consider beneficial for the mining industry?

A weekend of inspiring & powerful posts marking International Day of Women in Mining by so many women who are transforming our industry. The theme, "I am Mining and I Belong" to me was both a recognition, maybe a small celebration even, on how far we have come in my 40 years, but also a challenge. As I've become more engaged with Women In Mining serving as a committee member and now also a board member for the WIM Denver chapter, there are occasions where I am the only man “in the room”. I’ve got to tell you it feels a little odd at first, but I quickly realized this is how every woman in the industry has felt in some form or fashion although I was never never made to feel like I did not belong or unwelcome. But that is one of the privileges of being male in a male dominated industry. I’ve never had to think – to declare and affirm that “I belong”. It was always just accepted. We could, if we chose, flip the switch on much that leads to a sense of not belonging. We could fix the signage, the language in policies & procedures, that is gender specific and exclusionary. We could realize that PPE designed for men is not suitable for women. Maybe it is not be too much to hope for that we could be truly welcoming of women in all facets of our industry & recognize the incredible value they bring. But so long as women are less than 20% of our industry, that odd feeling of being “the only woman in the room” is inevitably likely to persist. And that is not something we can flip a switch and change tomorrow, or even next year. It is probably generational change, but we have to be dedicated to bringing that change about. Seeing comments on not being a real miner and so not fully belonging and seeing the response from IWIM and others reinforcing the sense of belonging to women “who work in, around and with the mining industry”, my thoughts gravitated to my wife Joy who is a truly amazing woman about to embark in a new role as a school principal. She probably should have been in this role 10 years ago but she as much as I embodies mining and belongs in this industry. All of us, women or men, know the incredible demands mining places on a partner, knows what it is to have someone keeping the home functioning when we left for work at 4:30 in the morning, or do not get home until late at night, to manage the demands of shift work, remote (FIFO) work, or seemingly endless work being gone or working through weekends to get the job done. The demands of making a new home when the job required another relocation. For now, at least while less than 20% of the mining workforce are women, it has been primarily women who in fact represent more than 80% of this amazing and talented contingent and without whom, so many men like myself could not have accomplished what we have. It is as much our partner’s accomplishment as ours, and often on top of all those other things they did as a de facto single parent, they were also building a career. #IDWIM2024 #IamMiningandIBelong

Back in mid-2022, directly to my face I had a work colleague say to me immediately after a management meeting I had attended that Gender Equity was “discrimination against men” All I was endeavouring to to do at that specific meeting was to get the topic of Diversity put onto the monthly meeting agenda to start the conversation. There really had been no conversation relating to how male dominated the organisation was and that there really hadn’t been any corporate focus on this for around 10 years. In May 2022, I was successful with this push to have Diversity discussed at our monthly management team meetings, but interestingly enough, when I had to step away from my role at Main Roads Western Australia some 6 months later due to over-exposure to psychosocial hazards, my Director removed this item off the agenda. I was the only female senior manager on that management team, so maybe he thought that because I no longer attended, and with an all male management team, there was no longer a need to have the discussion. Take a look at the commentary and attitudes of other former colleagues of mine have.. they very much align with this FinReview article. If a Government of Western Australia agency can’t understand the importance of gender equity and can’t lead best practice in this area, then really, how can they ask everyone else to do this. Not supporting those who try to work for change, not acknowledging or addressing concerns when they are raised with management means there really is systemic issues preventing change..

Mining’s push for gender diversity threatened by ‘Andrew Tate’ effect A belief that women are being promoted based on gender, rather than ability, has permeated to middle management and boardroom level, according to some female leaders. Deshnee Naidoo has spent her career climbing the ladder in mining and feels the mindset change towards women has been “phenomenal”. But lately, the former head of Vale Base Metals, a nickel and cobalt producer, has noticed a worrying backlash. When candidates from diverse backgrounds secure jobs, some men in the industry have started using the acronym DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — in a derogatory reframing: “Didn’t Earn It.” https://lnkd.in/ghyM6AgK
