90% of the brain’s development occurs before age five, yet UNICEF estimates that only 1/5 children in low-resource countries have access to pre-primary education.   BRAC’s been transforming early childhood education in Bangladesh, Uganda, and Tanzania with a model tailored to address each region’s most pressing needs. # 1 (Day Series) On this 9th September, we observe the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, a day dedicated to safeguarding the right to education in conflict zones. The right to learn is fundamental, yet, every day, millions of children face attacks on their schools, teachers, and educational institutions. 🔢 The Global Crisis in Numbers: Since 2015, over 22,000 attacks on education have occurred across 93 countries, directly impacting 75 million children. Around 67% of attacks have targeted schools directly, with remaining incidents affecting students, teachers, and other educational personnel. 🚨 The Impact: Children in conflict zones are 30% less likely to complete primary school and 50% less likely to finish secondary school, widening the education gap. Over 258 million children worldwide were out of school before the pandemic, a number exacerbated by conflict and war. Girls are disproportionately affected—up to 90% of girls in conflict zones face long-term disruption to their education. 🌍 Countries Taking Action: Syria: Despite years of conflict, over 400 schools have been rebuilt with UNICEF’s help, restoring education to 300,000 children. The country has seen a 12% increase in school enrollment in rebuilt areas. South Sudan: Since 2017, 1.2 million children have been enrolled in education programs, with a focus on girls’ education, and the government has aimed for a 20% increase in safe school environments. 📚 Why Protecting Education is Essential: Every additional year of schooling can increase future earnings by 10-20% and contribute up to 1.5% of a nation’s GDP. Education creates pathways to peace and stability—by protecting schools today, we foster economic resilience and social recovery in conflict-affected regions. I would like to acknowledge the insightful sessions conducted by Citizens Global on the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) agenda. During one of the panel discussions, I learned about the SDG 2024 review of all countries, where Tanzania has been ranked 130th out of 167. Despite efforts by the Tanzanian government to ensure every child has access to quality education, there remains a significant gap to bridge. According to the Sustainable Development Report, https://lnkd.in/eZyz5Wsx Tanzania's average performance in the provision of quality education is around 52%. This figure highlights a concerning issue: despite improvements in physical infrastructure, the lower secondary completion rate stands at only 36.4%. Furthermore, a report by UNICEF reveals that over 3.2 million children aged 7 to 13 are not in school, with 1.2 million of these children never having attended school at all. Rural and poor girls are particularly vulnerable, experiencing higher dropout rates from age 12 onwards due to child marriage, inadequate WASH facilities, and challenges related to menstruation. This situation calls for urgent action. I urge the Tanzanian @Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST), alongside Non-Governmental Organizations, to take immediate and decisive steps to address these challenges. We must work collaboratively to close the education gap, ensuring that every child in Tanzania has access to quality education, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable.

Today, 34.4 million girls in Africa  are not in school. What will the world look like when we educate all girls? What Happens If We Let Girls Learn? ·      She can lift her country out of poverty. If Africa enrolled 1% more girls in school, its  GDP would rise by 5%. ·       She can feed her family and her country. Investing in girls' education could boost agricultural output in Sub-Saharan Africa by 25%. ·       She can increase her income. For every year a girl stays in school, her income can increase by 15 to 25%. ·       She will invest in future generations. Educated women invest 90% of their income into their family. ·       She will send her children to school, continuing the cycle of education. Educated mothers are more than twice as likely to send their children to school. #educateagirleducatethenation

Education funding is crucial for the future of Africa's children. Less than 1 in 5 African countries dedicate 20 per cent or more of their public spending to education. It's time to prioritize foundational learning and ensure every child has a chance to thrive. #DAC2024 #YearofEducation

🌍📚 $2.5 Million for Education in Haiti: A Lifeline for Children in Crisis 📚🌍 In a crucial move to support children affected by gang violence in Haiti, a UN-backed global fund will provide $2.5 million to ensure thousands of children can safely attend school. 🌟✏️ Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait (ECW), announced this significant grant during a high-level UN mission in Port-au-Prince. The funding aims to reach nearly 75,000 children in the hardest-hit areas of Ouest and Artibonite. 🌟🚸 Education is a powerful tool to protect children from violence, forced recruitment, and other human rights violations. It can lift a nation from cycles of poverty, hunger, and conflict. 📚💪 With the support of UNICEF, the UN World Food Programme (WFP), and other partners, this grant will fund back-to-school initiatives, school feeding programs, mental health support, and more. 🏫🍎🛡️ Haiti faces unprecedented levels of violence and humanitarian needs, with 5.5 million people dependent on aid and many children displaced and deprived of education. The fact that only one-fifth of children in low-resource countries have access to pre-primary education is alarming and highlights the urgent need for organizations like BRAC to step in and address this gap. Early childhood is a crucial window of opportunity for cognitive, social, and emotional development, and missing out on quality education during this formative period can have long-lasting consequences. BRAC's approach of tailoring their early childhood education model to address the specific needs of each region is commendable. It demonstrates an understanding that a one-size-fits-all approach may not be effective, as different regions face unique challenges and cultural contexts. The Play Lab initiative, which you mentioned BRAC supported from 2020 to 2023, is particularly noteworthy. Moving forward, it's crucial that more organizations, governments, and international bodies prioritize and invest in early childhood education, particularly in low-resource settings. By providing children with a strong educational foundation from the earliest stages, we can unlock their full potential and create a ripple effect that contributes to the overall development and prosperity of their communities and nations.

In the dynamic and dire situation of Northeast Nigeria, thorough needs assessments are critical for effective education response. At the Education in Emergencies Working Group (EiEWG), we prioritize this process as a key engagement to understand and address challenges facing communities, schools, and conflict-affected children.
