🌟 Exciting News from the University of Amsterdam 🌟 It is exciting to announce that starting in April, I will be serving as the new Program Director of the BSc in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Amsterdam. This role is not just an honor but a profound responsibility, given our program's pioneering history in AI education since the 1990s—a time when AI was more a subject of science fiction than a scientific discipline. As we navigate the era of Foundation Models and Large Language Models, it is clear that AI is no longer just a tool for technologists. Its potential to revolutionize nearly every aspect of society is immense. This is a great mement to explore critical questions that will shape our curriculum and influence the future of AI education: - What defines AI, and what should an AI curriculum encompass? - What skills are essential for the next generation of AI scientists? - How can AI education be interdisciplinary, impacting fields from physics to chemistry, humanities, linguistics, mathematics, medicine, biology, ...? - How do we ensure AI is accessible to all, promoting an inclusive future? - How can we integrate the principles of #openscience to accelerate innovation across all sciences? The University of Amsterdam has always been at the forefront of AI education, and with these guiding questions, I am committed to pushing the boundaries further, ensuring our students are not only proficient in AI technologies but also ethical and innovative thinkers who can lead in a technologically advanced world. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this exciting journey to define the future of AI education. Starting from an already strong and successful BSc, we will next craft a program that prepares students to be pioneers of an AI-driven era, ensuring AI benefits everyone, everywhere. #ArtificialIntelligence #AIeducation #UniversityOfAmsterdam #OpenScience #Innovation

News from my research group at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt: "Lehr-/Lernbaukasten für KI (L²KI)" Methods and applications of artificial intelligence (#AI) are taught at the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt and its partner institutions across numerous degree programs and subjects. The goal of the #L²KI project "Lehr-/Lernbaukasten für KI" is to bring together lecturers and students from various disciplines to jointly prepare future graduates for the highly dynamic, fast-paced, and competitive international #AI job market. The toolkit allows for the individualized combination of modules, aligned with the three fundamental needs of students and lecturers: #belonging, #competence, and #autonomy. During the project phase, modules for selected parts of the #AI value chain are developed, tested, and discussed in regular exchanges. Additionally, the application of #L²KI in extracurricular teaching formats is systematically tested. This is a project by Ulrich Schlickewei and Munir Georges and we are working together with Sören Gröttrup, Sina Huber, Sviatoslav Tugeev et al. at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt , We are very happy to collaborate with Stefan Etschberger (Technische Hochschule Augsburg ), Tina Seidel (Technische Universität München ) and Ben Lenk-Ostendorf (TUM ProLehre | Medien und Didaktik). Thank you also Peter Riegler for supporting this project. https://lnkd.in/eriVhYwc

With the start of the new academic year, we take our STEM campaign back on track. Our next STEM campaigner is Charlotte Gerritsen, associate professor in Artificial Intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Her research focuses on AI and Behaviour. "What do I love about doing research in STEM? I really like using AI techniques to help gain insight into social processes. This allows us to develop intelligent systems that understand, empower and support human behaviour." #womeninscience #womeninstem #engineering #students #university #womenempoweringwomen #womenempowerment #womeninengineering #womeninspace #womeninquantum #academia #academics #womeninleadership #mathematics #science #sciencecommunication #research #phd

✨✨ Huge congratulations, Muhammad Afzaal, PhD! ✨✨ Muhammad successfully defended his PhD thesis “Explainable AI for Data-Driven Feedback and Intelligent Action Recommendations to Support” at DSV on September 30. In his thesis, Muhammad explores how students can improve their performance by effectively assessing their own learning actions. This can be done with the help of explainable AI. At the defence, the opponent Arnold Pears summarised what he thinks the thesis delivers: 1. A systematic analysis of prior literature 2. Approaches to modelling student performance 3. Techniques for identifying areas of intervention to enhance learning trajectories 4. Methods to integrate AI generated material into student exercises 5. An approach to presenting and visualising learning progress for students “The recommendations given by the system to a student should not be too far from their current performance. Students can’t expect to go from failing a quiz to having 100% correct answers. The recommendations should rather help them study to go from four correct answers, to six correct answers. It’s about nudging students and giving them recommendations that are doable”, explained Muhammad Afzaal at the defence. Curious about his findings? BUV LECTURERS AND STUDENTS’ RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN TOP 1% EDUCATION JOURNAL, ADVANCING THE UNDERSTANDING OF AI TEXT DETECTION IN EDUCATION We are proud to announce groundbreaking research led by Assoc. Prof. Dr Mike Perkins, Head of the BUV Centre for Research & Innovation, alongside members of the BUV GenAI Academic Research Cluster – Mr. Darius Postma, Mr. Don Hickerson, Mr. James McGaughran; collaborator Dr. Jasper Roe from James Cook University Singapore; and two BUV students, Binh V. and Huy Khuat. The paper was published in the prestigious International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, ranked among the top 1% of education journals worldwide. This research tackles a critical issue in the age of Generative AI (GenAI): the effectiveness of AI text detectors used to identify AI-generated content in student work. The study rigorously tested various AI text detectors using human-written samples, unmodified AI-generated text, and AI text manipulated to evade detection. The findings highlight the limitations of current detection methods. These results raise important questions about the reliance on AI detectors to ensure academic integrity. As Assoc. Prof. Perkins emphasises, “It’s important to consider the potential impact on inclusivity when the accuracy of these tools can be so easily manipulated by relatively simple techniques requiring no specialist knowledge.” The study highlights the need for a nuanced approach to AI in education, considering both the potential benefits and risks of these emerging technologies. It suggests that relying solely on AI detectors to uphold academic integrity may be problematic and calls for educators to reconsider approaches to assessment in light of AI advancements. ➤ Learn more about the research here: https://lnkd.in/ggXkKQaS #BUV #BritishUniversityVietnam #QAA #QS5Star #ResearchHighlights #GenAI __ British University Vietnam – The first overall QS 5-star and QAA-accredited university in Vietnam 📧 Email: sr@buv.edu.vn 🌐 Website: https://www.buv.edu.vn/ 📲 Zalo OA: zalo.me/buvofficial

How to deal with AI in education in NRW? ➡ The ‘AI in Education’ task force presented recommendations to the state government for the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning on July 2: We are proud to have contributed AI education and ethics recommendations to German government, including research from our colleagues within LamarrInstitute and many more! 🎉 Prof Emmanuel Müller (third from right), our director, was involved in the task force as an AI researcher and developer of future AI systems. He emphasised the importance of strengthening AI education beyond universities: "For trustworthy artificial intelligence made in NRW, we not only need numerous AI experts from NRW universities and NRW research institutes, but also broad education and training in schools and companies in order to be able to question and discuss artificial intelligence across the breadth of society."🙌
