Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the US. According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of all people in the US have some type of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and, most notably, high blood pressure. The leaders of a new AI-based technology are hoping to change way cardiovascular disease risk is assessed. New Zealand and San Diego-based Toku Eyes is the developer of the CLAiR platform, which aims to provide affordable, point-of-care and non-invasive evaluation for risk of cardiovascular disease using fundus retinal images through a routine eye exam. The technology is designed to integrate readily with existing retinal imaging cameras to provide real-time risk assessments with accuracy comparable to traditional cardiovascular risk assessment tools. Despite 20% of Irish people having ⬆️ Lp(a), awareness of this condition is low-even amongst healthcare professionals. Even though this genetic disorder affects so many people, it is not included on most standard lipid panels. Knowing Lp(a) levels is essential to understanding one’s risk factors. Results over 125 nmol/L (50 mg/dL) are considered ⬆ and could increase an individuals’ risk for heart attacks and stroke.  Although most people reading this post know about LDL-C (the so-called 'bad' cholesterol) which is more abundant than Lp(a), on a per-particle basis, Lp(a) is 6x more atherogenic than LDL-C 🔥 Individuals with a family history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or who have had a heart attack or stroke should be tested. I follow experts such as Kausik Ray MD FMedSci, Florian Kronenberg, Tom Dayspring, Peter Attia, Dr Paddy Barrett, John Kastelein, Sam Tsimikas (to name a few) to learn more about Lp(a) and in general about cholesterol management. #KnowLpa #LpaAwarenessDay

This 14-minute story is the bare summary of the key points of my 350+-page research manuscript on Endothelium, which only focuses on the practical parts. I emphasize cellular health as it is the foundation of our well-being. Like many scientists and clinicians, I firmly believe in the preventability and reversibility of atherosclerosis, supported by compelling evidence from the literature and clinical observations. Currently, I am composing a scientific paper on this subject and will share a summary of the literature review in an upcoming story here. This practical story centers on one preventive measure: enhancing the health of the Endothelium (endothelial cells), which is crucial in averting atherosclerosis. While I plan to write about other cell types, like cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, and pacemaker cells of the heart, in subsequent stories, in this post, I aim to explain the role of endothelial cells and offer practical tips based on research and experience. Having touched on endothelial cells in several cardiometabolic health articles, I have noted readers’ interest in understanding their functions and how to nurture these critical cells to improve cardiovascular health. Thus, I have chosen to clarify the significance of endothelial cells, address atherosclerosis as the primary underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, and provide nine actionable steps to mitigate associated risks proactively. There are multiple conditions within the cardiovascular disease category. Heart attack, heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, and stroke are the most common.
