International Environmental and CCA-focused Multi-Hazard and Climate Risk Assessment Specialist / Geologist
This morning I attended a vey interesting conference at the CEDEX headquarters in Madrid regarding the sustainable management of seas and coast. Quite impressed with the current expertise on these topics in Spain nowadays. The overall message of the session is that the comprehensive management and restoration of these environments is being addressed with clearly more sustainable approaches as compared to traditional practices from just some years ago. The current management at the Environmental Department of Spain is implementing a significant strategical change in this direction, eventhough they argued that they are facing strong rather "populistic" resistance in social networks. Their answer: "Common sense, respectful replies and Science". https://lnkd.in/dytSAK3d

Engineering Team Leader at CIVIX / Water New Zealand On-Site Wastewater Management Systems Group Committee Member / Young Engineers Chair for Auckland
Thanks to CIVIX for the opportunity to attend the Water New Zealand Conference 2024. It was wonderful to reconnect with familiar faces and make new connections within the industry. I look forward to future collaborations! In my opinion, some key takeaways from the conference include: - Investment in Infrastructure: There is a significant need for improvements and investment in three waters infrastructure across Aotearoa. - Te Mana o te Wai: It's crucial that Te Mana o te Wai is applied appropriately to ensure the sustainability and health of our waterways. - Drinking Water Treatment: Many drinking water treatment systems are lacking. Notably, there has been a recent push for the installation of Protozoa barriers, and Taumata Arowai is committed to regulating Drinking Water Quality. - Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal: Currently, onsite wastewater treatment and disposal are largely unregulated and unchecked, which poses risks to drinking water, receiving environments, and public health. When done well, it offers a sustainable solution for developments - my goal and passion. Overall, I am inspired by the discussions and innovations presented at the conference and am excited about a career that can help make improvements in this field.

It was great to be able to hear this speech in person and I encourage everyone to give it a read - both for its perspectives on the environment and on leadership. Upon reflection, in this hyper-partisan world, I find it counterintuitive that so many of the issues and approaches that have defined my work began during his tenure as Prime Minister. I went to Ottawa in 1986 to run a national conservation organization and was in the middle of a whirlwind of activity for the next six years. Canada's response to the Brundtland Commission was the unprecedented National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy. Chaired by future Governor General, David Johnston, the NRTEE brought together federal and provincial Cabinet members, CEOs, leading academics and civil society representatives for frank and open debate on issues and I was privileged to participate in a lot of this work. Mulroney's Green Plan was an ambitious conservation and environmental agenda backed by $5 billion in new money (almost $11 billion in 2024 dollars). Conservation organizations helped to shape and implement major components of it. The negotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement even benefited from an environmental advisory committee (of which I was a part) which led to the establishment of the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation. Then there was national park establishment, fighting acid rain, addressing the ozone layer and progress on numerous other fronts. One of Mulroney's lesser known contributions was to remove the Canadian Forest Service from the Department of Natural Resources to create Forestry Canada with its own Cabinet minister. Canada's forest practices were under attack and the country needed to respond. Forestry Canada played a lead role, working collaboratively with the provinces, in developing a national forest strategy for the country and in establishing scientifically credible criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management. There were negatives, of course, but a lot more positives. Canada was leading internationally, getting things done nationally, being relatively inclusive in developing policy and programs, and working cooperatively with provincial governments. Yesterday, a colleague told me about the number of civilian casualties in Ottawa caused by the war between the reds and the blues. Wouldn't it be great if we could put aside that nonsense and have everyone work for the good of the country?
Pollution Probe wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family and friends of The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney. In 2019, Mr. Mulroney was the recipient of Pollution Probe’s Environmental Leadership Award and we were so thrilled that he joined us in-person to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Mr. Mulroney’s contributions to the environment are extraordinary. His ambitions were high. His motivations were personal. See link https://lnkd.in/gGisvTBY for full statement.

Our work programme for 2024 has landed! ✨ The science has never been clearer: the time to step up for nature, biodiversity, and humanity is now. Solutions exist and are attainable, but there is no time to waste putting them into action. As the only environmental NGO at the table where standards are developed, ECOS is in pole position to drive, define, and assess how to drastically improve the environmental sustainability of key sectors and products. 👀 Learn more about our priorities for the year: https://lnkd.in/ezrTM-3H
