We’re lucky enough to work with numerous brands to showcase their marketing and creative prowess - and there’s plenty of it.  But every now and again, there's a standout piece of work that just captures people’s imagination and that deserves a big shout out.     And today, we want to give kudos to the talented creative and marketing team at Specsavers (client alert) for this week's absolute showstopper of a stunt! If you've been on Linkedin at all in the last few days, then you simply couldn't miss the applause for the Specsavers "Crashed Van". When there’s stunts every day and it’s hard to get traction, it was simply genius!    This activation encapsulates everything that is so intrinsic to the brand: humour, humility and a healthy dose of the unexpected. But at the heart of it was that signature "Should’ve gone to Specsavers" - a tag line so right and brilliant, that it just keeps on giving.   "Should've" allows Specsavers to play in a multitude of creative spaces and treatments, which is why every campaign evokes such a new and positive reaction. But no matter how the creative manifests itself, staying true to the crux of this age-old tag line means that every idea is unmistakably Specsavers with an important message at its heart.   If you haven’t seen it check it out here...

What does 𝐀𝐈𝐃𝐀 stands for? 𝟏. 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Ran a PR campaign four months prior to launch, promoting award, stylists, qualifications etc. and was reinforced through a DM campaign to targeted customer groups. 𝟐. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭: Executed a direct mail campaign to offer a free consultation or hair cut and finish. They used research to support that this would work, as females are loyal if the offer is compelling. 𝟑. 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞: Close to the opening of the new salon, they ran exclusive local launch events which was advertised through local press and social media. This created a local buzz for 'people wanting an invite' and excited to see the new salon. 𝟒. 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Clear CTAS were positioned on the Facebook site (call to reserve), the website (call to book) and local advertising (call in to receive discount or the offer).

Such a pleasure to interview Fernando Machado today and hear firsthand about his incredible marketing career. Fernando's journey has been nothing short of legendary, leading some of the most iconic campaigns and platforms in our industry's history. From BK's "Have it your way" to Dove's "Real Beauty," his impact has been felt across decades. My biggest takeaway: In a world where shiny new objects often steal the spotlight, especially for new CMOs eager to leave their mark, Fernando's wisdom shines through… Consistency is king. Building a brand property is done over time and the best marketers build on what’s already working. Fernando’s first conversations were with those who came 10 or 20 years before him at Dove. The ‘Real Beauty’ platform was in place for 10 years already when he arrived. In fact, David Ogilvy came up with the three quarter moisturising claim for Dove back in the 50’s but that was still so valuable to the brand. The classic CMO mistake is to come in and think you should throw all of that out and start something new. Be humble, be respectful and don’t throw out what’s working.
