New App to Engage Tourists with History, Culture and Environment A new app called Re:BC recently launched presenting regenerative tourism opportunities in British Columbia (BC) and Revelstoke is part of the early list of locations. Regenerative #tourism can be defined as a more #sustainable approach to tourism. It aims to shift the nature of tourism from an extractive process where visitors simply come and go with just an economic exchange to one where the tourists interact with the #history, #culture, and #environment in the places they visit. “We are working to create opportunities for people to engage with regenerative tourism across the province. And so, the idea behind that is providing ways for people to positively impact the communities that they’re visiting when they’re travelling,” said Hollie Galloway, project manager with Re:BC. The app launched Monday, March 18, and so far, it has three different locations offering regenerative initiatives. The locations include Parksville Qualicum Beach, Squamish, and Revelstoke, but the group continues to reach out to different tourism organisations to expand the options. This is an excellent initiative that can be replicated a many other destinations not just in BC but around the world. Travel with respect for the people you are visiting and the intention to learn about others with an attitude of non judgemental acceptance, can not only do good but it's the only thing that can do any good. Travel without those things, and sadly there's too much of it, is like going to a zoo. No respect, no appreciation, no understanding. Only voyeurism and spectacle after which you leave feeling that you're superior. That's something incidentally, which those arranging for cultural events for tourists need to think about. How can you help tourists to get a taste of the local culture which doesn't compromise the dignity of whatever is being done? After all the dance or performance was never meant to be done for tourists. It is usually a part of a serious religious or social tradition. I would say do away with doing them for tourists in hotels. Let tourists visit the places and events live and experience the real thing. Beware of reinforcing social, economic, racial and political prejudice and superiority in the name of tourism. Ask when did you see brown and black people watch white people dance or perform for tips in a hotel? If that's unthinkable then why's the opposite so common? Maybe because white men can't dance? Or jump?

🌍🔎 Resources for Sustainable Outbound Tourism launched! NRIT and the project group 'Are we going too far 2.0' are have launched the (Dutch) website Bronnen voor Duurzaam uitgaand Tourisme (Resources for Sustainable Outbound Tourism') More than 300 sources are made available around 31 determining themes that are still relevant for making outbound tourism more sustainable. According to Rene Van Der Duim of the project group, a lot has happened in recent decades regarding sustainable outbound tourism: “We wanted to unlock the knowledge that has been developed over the past 50 years. Many sources were in danger of being lost, especially sources that were not digitally available. A new report published 22 October 2024 highlights 40 mechanisms that could enable policymakers, Destination Management Organisations (DMOs), National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) and others to better distribute tourism’s benefits across local communities. It follows this summer’s global headlines and local protests fuelled by residents’ frustrations in popular tourism destinations. As tourism grows to record levels, the report examines how tourism’s benefits don’t always reach communities, and in some cases tourism activity can exacerbate local inequalities. For example, tourism revenue can be concentrated in the hands of a few, while jobs created can be low paid, and typically 50%-80% of tourist spend “leaks” from the destination, providing little or no benefit locally. #tourism #hospitality #givingback #circulareconomy #communities #sustainable #sustainability https://lnkd.in/g_-rkmQj

Attended the fully-booked Outscape 'Regenerative Tourism in our Great Outdoors' workshop this morning. Really happy to reconnect with Tina O'Dwyer of The Tourism Space® who workshopped a collaborative path to understanding potential regenerative tourism. The desire to 'Do More Good' rather than 'Do Less Harm' was strong in the room and is the natural progression from a Sustainable Tourism business to a #Regenerative Tourism business. During the workshop each group brainstormed and spoke for a different aspect of the overall business. E.G. Nature, Tourism, Public Policy, Visitor, Business. It was fascinating to see that the group nominated to speak for 'Business' ended up with the business undergoing a transformation into a 'social enterprise!'  As a result, we recognised that Tourism Businesses are being asked to be all things to all people. Environmentally sustainable, community connectors, cultural placemakers and responsible tourism providers. Without the staff, training or financial support to put it all into practice. The 'Public Policy' group had the most points to make but this just highlighted the huge complexity of making those 'policies' on our behalf. Tina pointed out that being a profitable tourism business should be a primary goal. If you are profitable, can pay your responsible employees and suppliers a proper wage then you become economically #sustainable and can stick around, continuing the transformation. Having 'Place' at the centre allows the conversation to start at a non-contentious point. (The Place Paradigm). Without the Place, there is no business, for any of us. Our 'Place' is our wonderful outdoor landscape.  Calling #Nature the "Asset" must stop. It is a finite resource. It is not there to be stripped, it needs a voice of it's own, to be nurtured and cared for, just like us and our visitors. Overtourism: an urgent call for sustainable tourism practices Tourism Cares #Overtourism, the detrimental impact of an overwhelming number of #tourists in popular destinations, has gained significant attention. When #visitors surpass the carrying capacity of a location, the consequences for the environment and local communities are severe. The adverse effects of over-tourism are extensive, from #pollution and water scarcity to rising home prices and cultural exploitation. The economic benefits of tourism must be scrutinized: who truly benefits, and at what cost? Environmental impact: Mass tourism strains ecosystems, leading to pollution, habitat destruction, and #biodiversity loss. Popular attractions suffer from overcrowding, causing erosion and disrupting wildlife. Cultural and community Impact: The commodification of culture for commercial gain and the displacement of residents due to rising property prices are profound issues. Short-term rentals and mass tourism development often lead to gentrification and the loss of community identity. Infrastructure strain: #Destinations need help with #overcrowded streets, overwhelmed public transportation, and increased pressure on necessities. This diminishes residents' quality of life and degrades the visitor experience. Many destinations are now implementing policies to combat over-tourism: #Amsterdam: Restricting cruise ships. -European Cities (#Venice, #Athens): Limiting or dispersing crowds. #Galapagos Islands & Aruba: Increasing tourist taxes. #Copenhagen: Campaigns for responsible travel. We must recognize that these fragile places can only accommodate such pressures with significant change.
