This book delves into the multifaceted dimensions of Hansen's disease, offering a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of its clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic interventions. In addition, it seamlessly intertwines historical perspectives, elucidating the disease's societal impact through the ages, with cutting-edge clinical research that has illuminated the intricate pathogenesis and diverse clinical presentations of the disease. Editing a book like this means more than five years of uninterrupted dedication. We worked at a hard pace, there was no day or hour when we weren't reading, writing, revising, or correcting a chapter. Contributing to increasing knowledge about Hansen's disease and improving the lives of people affected by this disease has made every day of this process worthwhile. In a new study, involving several intensive care centers in Germany, Thon and colleagues describe the opposing expression profiles of Aquaporin-3, and Aquaporin-9 during sepsis. Furthermore, reduced Aquaporin-9 expression was strongly correlated with increased patient survival. Head and neck paraganglioma are associated with the parasympathetic sensory branches of the glossopharyngeal (CN IX) and vagus (CN X) nerves. They have low metastatic potential (around 10%) but can be aggressive locally. Data on the pathogenesis and genetic risk of metastatic behavior are either missing or conflicting. The First International Congress on Head and Neck Paragangliomas in 2023 (in Piacenza, Italy) highlighted a lack of international evidence-based consensuses and guidelines for HNPGLs. In collaboration with health care organizations, industry, and professional/patient-related societies global initiatives (registries/databases, symposia, and congresses) and specialized surgical and clinical reference centers should be established to advance the care of patients with these tumors and of relatives at genetic risk— an unmet need for this rare disease.   #Paraganglioma #Pheochromocytoma #SDHD #Guideline #ThePheoParaAlliance https://lnkd.in/d9VWYsmD

Unexpected Gratitude: How Our Patient Survey Turned into Heartfelt Thanks In our quest to advance the treatment of osteoid osteoma in Ukraine, we recently embarked on a project to gather data on the effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation. We initiated a patient survey, expecting to collect valuable information and insights to support our ongoing research. What we received, however, was far more profound. Instead of just data, our patients filled their responses with overwhelming gratitude. Messages of thanks poured in—expressing relief from pain, joy at returning to normal activities, and appreciation for the care they received. It’s moments like these that remind us of the real impact of our work. We set out to analyze outcomes, but what we found was a deeper connection with those we’ve treated. These expressions of thanks have fueled our passion and commitment to continue improving our methods, knowing that behind every procedure is a person whose life has been profoundly changed. This unexpected outpouring of gratitude has been humbling, and it reinforces our belief that RFA is not just a medical procedure—it’s a life-changing solution that we are proud to offer.
