A few weeks ago, I started a LinkedIn group chat called “Saving OTs.” I invited three awesome OTs to help me solve one of the biggest challenges facing our profession. We wanted to try a different angle to try to save OTs from burnout. To stop them from leaving the profession. And to help them move from surviving to thriving. There are lots of resources available to help clinicians, but we felt a lot of the time the stress was caused because employers were hiring early career OTs, without knowing what it truly takes to support them. We don’t think they intentionally set out to burn and churn through OTs. But we did think that perhaps sometimes they underestimated the task they had taken on when they signed up their first enthusiastic new grad. They may not have carefully considered why they wanted to provide OT services in the first place. They maybe chose the first OT who submitted an application without actually interviewing them or asking enough of the right questions. They booked in a few sessions with an external supervisor thinking that would be enough, only to find it barely scratched the surface of what was needed. They gave them ‘promotions’ early, without considering if they were truly ready. And yep, things often didn’t work out.
