Values-driven businesses create quality jobs. Inclusive business models address inequality and ensure fair working conditions, and they are a key element of the wellbeing economy for Scotland. A worker co-operative is a type of business model with a track record for resilience and fair work and is completely owned by its workers. The model is flexible and can operate in any sector, at any size. How can public transport ensure equity and inclusivity in the wake of hybrid working? Hybrid working is here to stay. For some, this has become the norm, however occupation type, income and relative social advantage all strongly relate to the ability to work from home. Our report ‘Equitable public transport in a hybrid working world’ analyses work from home patterns in Adelaide and Perth in 2021 and presents four recommendations to achieve impactful outcomes so everyone can access transport services when they need to. 1. Align vision and objectives early to guide investment towards equality 2. Change how we measure transport projects to capture holistic outcomes 3. Act early in suburban residential growth areas 4. Provide decentralised access to cover more areas in suburbs Download the report to learn more: https://bit.ly/3tMaviw #Transport #TransportPlanning #WFH

Infrastructure development & economics, Jacobs Senior Director & Visiting Professor UWE Bristol, dog lover
https://lnkd.in/eqPPXvrH Great article on COVID impact on commuting published by ICE from my Jacobs colleagues Tom Fuller John Siraut and Diogo Magriço - Business Case & Economics at Jacobs - “The study of economics does not seem to require any specialised gifts of an unusually high order. Is it not, intellectually regarded, a very easy subject compared with the higher branches of philosophy and pure science? Yet good, or even competent, economists are the rarest of birds. An easy subject, at which very few excel.” John Maynard Keynes - well we have several of these rarities at Jacobs The COVID-19 pandemic led to fundamental changes in working and commuting patterns for a segment of the workforce with significant impact on the level of patronage of public transport systems which focused on catering to commuters. This paper aims to quantify this impact in the long-term, using a longitudinal sample of 3,826 commuters with a focus on those using rail in Great Britain. Using a panel built in 2020, this paper compares the commuting habits pre-pandemic with those in February 2023. Survey data can now shed light on long-term behavioural adjustments. Building on previous waves, the current wave addresses topics such as commuting frequency, frequency of working from home and individual perceptions of working at home and/or in the workplace plus long-term individual decisions like changes in home location. It concluded that the pandemic led to a reduction of 1.18 in the number of days commuting to work per week and an increase of 0.85 in the number of days working from home. In addition, if employers had not put restrictions on workplace attendance, the return to commuting would have been 12 percentage points lower. Nonetheless, there is evidence employees are internalising their employer's restrictions to some extent.

When positive forces coincide. #ESG, #Experienceeconomy, #Wellbeing and #Worklife. "Right now, interest is all about employee engagement with the #workplace but reducing #scope3 emissions from their #commute to work is also an issue emerging on employers’ radar," he says. Being at the #office and getting there is the same logic. Reduce friction, elevate experience. #Experience of the commute (and the workplace) is crucial if we want to make workplace and work life even greater. “It was about making people think: ‘If I’m not paying for tolls or parking, maybe I’ll go to work more often; maybe it’s more convenient’,” he says. "Changing corporate behavior and individual habits is difficult." Thx George Mair for sending me this article. Thank you, #landlords of #Perth, for providing an abundance of end-of-journey facilities for the citizens. And thank you, #CityofPerth, for investing in so many separated and safe cycling lanes throughout Perth. P.S. You may consider me conservative, but despite the remarkable advantages of e-bikes, I still have a preference for traditional bicycles. https://lnkd.in/gX3z5DKm

The start of a new academic year brings flux to many households up and down the country. Some families may be sending their children to school for the first time, whilst others are well into the annual routine of it. As an employer, you may find it is a time of year when you are more likely to get requests for flexible working, as kids need to be in new places at new times. The law on flexible working has changed in recent years and is likely to change further under the new Labour government. For that matter, societal expectations have changed significantly too, especially since the pandemic. Learn more in our latest blog: https://buff.ly/3ThBEDv #HRAdvice #FlexibleWorking #HybridWorking
