High Definition Vehicle Insurance (HDVI)’s Post

Brake-related violations are the leading cause of vehicle out-of-service orders and can severely impact a fleet's vehicle maintenance CSA scores. As we approach the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Brake Safety Week, which begins this Sunday, August 25, and runs through Sunday, August 31, Mark Brest, Senior Fleet Services Operations Manager at HDVI, discusses the importance of consistent brake maintenance. He shares tips for fleets to prioritize brake maintenance not just during this dedicated week but as a regular, ongoing practice. #brakesafetyweek #brakesafety #fleetmanagement #fleetsafety

As a transportation adjuster I handle a significant number of burn downs annually due to brake related fires. A number of which are from a "run flat" that wraps wire from the disintegrating inside tandem wrapping around the slack adjuster dragging the brake and super heating the brake drum. Brake inspection on every pre-trip should also include tire inspection, especially when running re-caps on trailers. Most drivers today don't know what the travel length is on slack adjuster nor what the minimum shoe thickness is on a drum brake shoe. Safety managers having driver education classes for drivers on basic maintenance of the equipment can save them the loss of equipment and cargo as well as the cost of property damage claims for repair of the pavement when the fire department is miles away and the pave sustains severe damage.
