Great to see the amazing achievements of the impressive young people that the Sutton Trust works with through this excellent new blog from James Yarde. Using data from HEAT we can see the deep impact that participating in The Sutton Trust programmes can have for participants. https://lnkd.in/edJBD6JF We know that the students we work with are already keen to go to university before starting their programme. Our programmes: 🔀 help young people make informed choices about their next steps, 🔑 support the development of necessary skills to get there and, 😃 give them the confidence boost they need to get started. This is borne out by the data that shows when controlling for attainement, background characterists and motivation, Sutton Trust students are 60% more likely to enrol at university and Sutton Trust Summer School students are 46% more likely to enrol at a research intensive university. This matters because many universities still have access gaps with students from underserved communities less likely to attend leading institutions. so If you know a young person in Y12 (England or Wales), Y13 (N. STUDY IN THE UK FOR FREE Level: Postgraduate studies College: Communication, Arts etc School: University of the Arts London (UAL) Deadline: Friday 5 July 2024 Start date: September/October Scholarship amount: More than £50,000 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: You must hold an offer to study a full-time taught master’s course at one of UAL’s Colleges and Institutes starting in 2024/25. Your course must offer either a Grad Dip, M ARCH, MA, MFA, MBA, MRes or MSc qualification. Your course must be delivered full-time in person in London. Online and low residency courses are not eligible. You are not eligible to apply if you already hold a UK postgraduate taught qualification (or one at an equivalent level) from studies undertaken in the UK or abroad. Criteria 2: You need to be ordinarily resident in one of the low income economy countries detailed in our list of qualifying countries (see below). The list excludes the following developed countries: Canada, China, Japan, UK, USA, and the European Union/EEA member states. If your country is not on the list you may be eligible for other funding options, including the UAL International Postgraduate £7,000 Scholarship. Evidence such as a copy of your immigration documents, ID card or formal proof of your address must be included as part of your application. Or You are an asylum seeker in the UK at the point at which you make your scholarship application. If you need help with accessing this application, please contact Student Funding. The only thing missing from this strategy is ensuring all #scottish #highereducation institutions have access to Non-EU #graduateoutcomes data, which will be essential if the strategy is be be delivered. No longer available through HESA: Higher Education Statistics Agency this is the missing piece in order to deliver, diversification, fill shortage skills & expand transnational education - this data is available to all Scottish institutions now through Asia Careers Group SDN BHD for under £10,000 per #university annual subscription. “Scotland already has more top universities per head of population than any other country in the world,” Higher & Further Education minister in #Scotland, Graeme Dey said. The strategy outlines actions under three ambitions, diversity #TNE & #research. To help diversify’ the region’s #internationalstudent population, the government will work through Brand #scotland to promote a “welcoming Scotland to prospective #internationalstudents and staff”, as well as delivering a “Scottish #Education Exchange Test & Learn Project” before the end of the academic year. This will be accompanied by a #Talent Attraction & #Migration Service that provides information about #Scotland for those who are thinking of staying post-#degree, & also generally encourage more #students to stay in Scotland to work in the region’s “growth sectors”. The report highlights Scotland’s recognition as a “cultural & creative hub”, especially through its film, television, & gaming sectors, & as being a “world leader in #research & #innovation”. “In the coming months & years, we will continue to work with Scotland’s #universities and colleges to help them #diversify their international student, research, & staff population by enhancing our reputation as a world-leading safe & inclusive country, with open-minded social policies,” added Dey. To maximise the region’s social, #educational & economic contribution on a global scale – the second ambition – the strategy read, “We will use our international offices & program of Ministerial visits to actively promote & grow Scotland’s world class #transnationaleducation”. Great to see Melbourne continues to be recognised as one of the top 5 best cities in the world to be a student, according to QS Best Student Cities 2025. Melbourne is #5 and Sydney is #6 – further underscoring our reputable higher education sector and the $47.8 billion export industry we have collectively fostered over decades. Let’s hope that the Government’s proposed international student caps policy does not have a disastrous impact on the sector and wider Australian society. Navigating the Journey: The Challenges and Triumphs of an International Student in the UK It was October 2006. I vividly remember arriving at Leeds Airport on a dark, gloomy afternoon. It was my first day as an international student in the UK, starting my journey at the University of Leeds. As a single mother, leaving home and my child behind to pursue a postgraduate degree was daunting yet necessary for our future. The beginning was tough, but the International Office team made all the difference. Comprised of both home and international students, they were understanding and supportive during moments of homesickness and doubt. Thanks to them, my experience transformed, and I grew immensely. Four years after completing my MA in Leeds, I pursued a PhD, interviewing international students. It felt like coming full circle, understanding their challenges and fears. The cultural aspects were the most challenging, with different social norms, academic conventions, and daily interactions often feeling overwhelming. This sometimes made me feel isolated and unsure of myself. Support from my supervisors, Professor Robertson and Professor Dale at the University of Bristol, was crucial. They provided both academic and empathetic support, aiding me in adjusting and ensuring I did not veer towards failure. The debate about the significance of international students in the UK is inevitable. UK universities benefit greatly from their presence, not just financially, but in terms of the global role the UK plays. For international students, a UK university on their CV opens doors to better career opportunities. International students need committed and understanding support from their universities. Comprehensive international services and empathetic academic teams, including supervisors and tutors who respect students’ backgrounds, are essential for helping them settle in and succeed. Recent statistics highlight the growing number of international students in the UK. As of 2023, there are over 605,000 international students enrolled in UK universities, a significant increase from previous years. This influx underscores the UK’s appeal as a leading destination for higher education. However, recent articles highlight that Germany is now offering a more attractive higher education experience, with prestigious universities, free courses, and reasonable living expenses compared to the UK, US, and Australia. **Accepting scholarship mentoring requests** If you have a postgraduate offer from the University of the Arts London (UK), consider these full and partial funding options: the UAL International Postgraduate £50K tuition fee waiver + accommodation scholarship (4 awards globally) is a shot worth trying. Alongside you can also apply for the UAL International Postgraduate £7K fee waiver scholarships (300 awards globally). Both these scholarship applications require financial documents* according to the category an applicant is in. Scholarships are assessed and considered for more than 40 countries globally (see links in comments, to check your country and eligibility). *Financial documents have historically caused rejection; important to be extremely mindful of which documents to share. The scholarship question prompts require deep reflection and patience.
