Last week in The American Banker, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon was quoted as saying he is “seeing signs of potential resurgence” in M&A and capital markets activity, pointing to a backlog of deals.” Our take at Middlemarch Partners is that what is good for Goldman is also good for growth capital stage companies in the financial services space. Investor attitudes are improving, exit multiples are expanding, and transaction momentum is building. If you are a growth stage company, “make hay while the sun shines” and get yourself ready to raise capital or seek M&A targets. 

Bloomberg News has reported that Morgan Stanley has struck a deal with an investor group to buy $700 million of property loans tied to the failed Signature Bank. The reported deal includes heavyweights like Blackstone and CPPIB, which signifies strategic maneuvering within the financial sector, as MS capitalizes on investment opportunities amid evolving market conditions. I recently read an encouraging piece in The Wall Street Journal exploring how Wall Street banks have been experiencing dealmaking “green shoots.” This has resulted in renewed optimism, despite declining M&A revenue.   We have seen a lot of speculation about how macro uncertainties are impacting dealmaking across the globe. However, success in dealmaking is not always contingent on macro uncertainties.   Over the course of my career, I have always found that M&A, when executed in a strategic and mindful manner, can be an effective way for financial services firms to rejuvenate their strategies, complement synergies, and explore new ways to drive growth. Macro uncertainties are important and should be considered, but what takes deals over the line are established and trusted partnerships, tenacity across the deal teams and – despite short-term headwinds – a clear, forward-looking view of the transaction’s ultimate value and potential.   #financialservices #mergersandacquisitions #transactions #regulatory
