Did you know today is Parking Day? Some of you maybe wondering what exactly is Parking Day. Well let me explain. PARK(ing) Day fosters social interaction, civic engagement, critical thinking, and creativity through community participation and play. Each year on the third Friday of September, cities worldwide partake in transforming parking spaces into vibrant parks. Local residents, organizations, and businesses collaborate to create inviting spaces for relaxation, networking, and entertainment. This annual event turns any downtown into a living urban laboratory, showcasing innovative ideas and featuring performances from local artists. Why I believe PARK(ing) Day is so very Important in todays world. 1. Community Building: It encourages residents to connect, fostering a sense of belonging and community spirit. 2. Reimagining Urban Spaces: It challenges conventional uses of public space, promoting innovative solutions for urban design. 3. Civic Engagement: By involving diverse groups, it empowers citizens to express their ideas and advocate for change in their neighborhoods. 4. Environmental Awareness: It highlights the need for green spaces in urban areas, encouraging sustainable practices and enhancing city livability. After almost 3 decades of collaborating with landscape architects and urban planners, I've concluded that landscape architecture is vital to the future of humanity. This profession inspires me so and attracts critical thinkers who intricately weave community, culture, creativity, and sustainability and soul into every aspect of their designs and lives. I am incredibly proud that our teams have the opportunity to work with some of the nation's leading landscape architects right here in Texas, alongside our SPEKtacular manufacturers such as mmcité usa and @hausersite @edsconcrete @outsider @idsculpture. With time, however, business parks like Avon Business Park have picked up the pace and are meeting the diverse needs of their clients through transformation and customization of spaces to suit diverse business needs. SRG + CannonDesign did exactly that when designing two parking garages for a renowned athletic company. These next-generation structures redefine the typical parking experience by prioritizing placemaking and creating substantial spaces for pedestrian and recreational use. The #cre question I'm asked more than any other... "What's going to happen with the RenCen?" My two cents... no idea!! To bring everyone up to speed: the Renaissance Center was built in the 1970s to help revitalize Downtown Detroit's office market, and it became the world HQ for General Motors in the 1990s. GM, which owns this building, recently signed a lease to move to a newer building down the street, which leaves a very open ended question about the fate of a very public building that means a lot to many Detroiters. The last 10 years have not been kind to the Renaissance Center, and with the benefit of hindsight it's easy to understand why. The complex has a shopping mall flavor and a 70's campus feel, and as Downtown Detroit has become more vibrant, it feels even more isolated since it's located across the street from the action. The part you can't see is how confusing the first few floors can be... this building is notorious for getting first-time visitors and long-time residents turned around with its maze of stairways, passageways, and elevator banks. It's happened to me more than once, and I'm not alone there. If there's one lesson here, it just might be to be aware of massive mega-projects such as this.
