There is no excuse for not knowing how to articulate the value of design, today. It's in many aspects of our work at the DBA. In fact, you could say it's in our DNA, and most people involved in any way with us will be able to do this - evidence their impact. If you don't know how to do this, or you're feeling a bit rusty on the subject, or you're just feeling a bit bleh! with everything right now, come and spend the afternoon and evening with us next Tuesday and kick those feelings out the window! I promise you that you will not find a more stimulating discussion to be a part of this side of Christmas! You can sit back and take it all in, or you can lean forward and take part. Our speakers are with us all day, so you don't even need to pluck up the courage to ask your question in front of an audience! What would you like to ask Richard Seymour? What would you like to ask Dr. Mary McBride? What would you like to tell Clive Grinyer? You could be sat across the dinner table from them. Make time for you, and I bet everyone notices the next day! You'll certainly have your answer to how to articulate the value of design. See you next week. #TheDesignEffect #dbamember #DesignIndustry #DesignOurFuture
The breadth of our design industry contains a huge opportunity. As different disciplines of design work across industry sectors, it creates a vast range of experiences for us all to draw on. What we can learn from how another company approaches certain challenges, or from how a designer working in a different field thinks and creates solutions, is invaluable. We all need to look up and around us. Effective design reaches into business and catalyses change and progress. But to be most effective, we need to understand how our competitors and audiences are thinking, and what they are doing. That’s why the DBA is bringing people together on 8th October – to talk, listen, debate, celebrate and share with one another our experiences of creating truly effective design. mike-taylor.org | Learning, Design, and Technology Innovator: Making Work Smarter and Learning Cooler!
Design & Discovery | This TED Talk by David Carson is worth a watch. His whole point is about communicating information BEFORE our brain actually has time to consciously process what we’re looking at. He humorously reflects on various aspects of design, emphasizing the emotional impact and simplicity of different mediums, from traditional slide projectors to minimalist street signs and graffiti. He shares personal anecdotes, like his misinterpretation of airport gate signs, and critiques both historical and contemporary graphic design practices. Through examples like a minimalist street sign in Milan and a visually compelling yet simple billboard in Florida, he underscores the importance of intuition and emotion in design. He also discusses the power of unique personal experiences in creating impactful work and the value of passion in one's career, concluding with a humorous anecdote about his father's career as a test pilot and the definition of a fulfilling job. The essence of great design lies in its ability to evoke emotion and convey clear messages, leveraging simplicity and personal intuition to create impactful and memorable experiences.

That’s what we’ll be talking about at The Design Effect. What’s important? What’s relevant for us to pay attention to? What are successful individuals working in business doing now and next? How are they doing it? The Design Effect isn’t time away from what matters in your day-to-day; it’s an essential day. Be part of it. I had the most amazing time doing a Q&A with the Service Design Network Switzerland on Saturday. If you want to hear how to use experiments as a tool for all of life, (and some personal examples) the recording is out! 🥰 #experimentsforlife #designthinking #personalgrowth #professionagrowth
You can now rewatch the recordings and get the slides of the three talks from the Swiss Service Design day. A big thank you to Maaria Tiensivu, Pascal Wicht and Christine Staïesse for all these inspiring ideas 💚 https://lnkd.in/esn7JJPW

DESIGN ISN'T JUST ABOUT BEAUTY—IT'S ABOUT SOLVING PROBLEMS. As the month started, our Managing Partner, Andreas Diefenbach, served as a juror for the Rat für Formgebung - German Design Council Awards 2025, where he brought his passion for meaningful innovation to the table. Reflecting on his time with the jury, Andreas highlighted the importance of going beyond surface-level changes and focusing on transformative design solutions that make a real impact. Remember, it's not about "putting lipstick on a pig"—it's about transforming the pig into something extraordinary. 🐖💄 As designers, we face a world of challenges, and it's our responsibility to find creative solutions that look good and work better. By trusting in people's adaptability and the power of design, we can create lasting change. Thank you to the Rat für Formgebung - German Design Council, Jeannette Altherr, KONRAD BERGSTRÖM and the community for sharing vibrant discussions and insights. We're already looking forward to the awards ceremony in Frankfurt in February! And a big thanks to all participants—true competition only exists through your submissions. 🚀 #GermanDesignAwards #DesignForInnovation #PHOENIXDesign #ProblemSolving #DesignLeadership #InnovationThroughDesign #MeaningfulDesign #DesignIntegrity #TransformativeDesign
