We've been doing a lot of listening by calling our customers and potential shareholders and one big issue has been coming up again and again: food insecurity in the context of food waste. How can we have this shocking problem in Australia when 25% of our produce never leaves the farm because its not pretty enough for supermarkets? One of the things we are most proud about at Good & Fugly is growing the impact we can have helping the food insecure by fighting food waste. Especially when it comes to our kids, 1 in 4 of them go to school without enough to eat. And only 1 in 7 kids get enough fruit and veg. With the cost-of-living crisis this is bound to get worse, but it shouldn't have to. This issue has prompted us to do some extra good with our Birchal raise. For every $1,000 raised during the private offer period, we are committing to giving 5 boxes of fruit and veg to disadvantaged schools where food insecurity is a day-to-day reality for their kids.. If you want to get on board, why not check out our page https://lnkd.in/dhQPSE3i The photo is of the proud winners of G&F's contest to find Australia's Fugliest Fruit or Veg --a much-loved primary school garden and the students and teacher who tend it. Today we are launching our manifesto ahead of the General Election, calling on the next Government to commit to delivering more surplus food to those in need. Titled “Where’s the Food? Strengthening Communities Through Surplus Food Redistribution”, the manifesto lays out measures to incentivise businesses to redistribute more of their surplus, proposals to support the redistribution sector and strengthen communities in the process, and a plan for a wider food system reset. We are calling for: 💚 Subsidies for farmers to cover redistribution costs 💚 Tax benefits for businesses donating surplus food 💚 Mandatory food waste reporting 💚 Clear guidelines for ‘good samaritans’ on food donation safety 💚 Sustained funding for farm level food redistribution 💚 A UK-wide plan to end charitable food aid 💚 Resources for local food waste and food security projects By working together, government, the third sector, and industry can overcome the challenges to redistributing surplus – and ensure more food reaches the people who need it. At FareShare North East we're supporting FareShare UK as they launch their manifesto ahead of the General Election, asking "Where's The Food?" This is particularly relevant for us at FareShare North East as we're running out of food - even though millions of tonnes of good to eat surplus food are still going to waste in the UK The manifesto sets out a clear plan to remove barriers to food redistribution and help us to work together with the government, industry, and the third sector to ensure we feed people first Just as important, the manifesto also calls for a UK-wide plan to end the need for emergency food aid - it is unacceptable in a country as wealthy as the UK, nor is it a lasting solution to food insecurity Read more & show your support here - https://lnkd.in/eRT7vCgp

Had a few moments this afternoon to catch up on some industry news, I read two thought-provoking articles in 'The Grocer' highlighting the urgent need to tackle food poverty. First, the government-funded Holiday Activities & Food (HAF) programme, run by the charity Meals & More (set up by Brakes), is set to end this year. As the Chancellor considers the upcoming budget, it’s critical that tackling child hunger during school holidays remains a priority. Another article discussed how The Felix Project is expanding its services, distributing surplus food directly to community organisations in London instead of through warehouses. This initiative not only helps combat food waste but also makes it easier for manufacturers to prevent excess food from going to landfill, addressing food poverty in the process. Both issues highlight the need for continued innovation and commitment to solving hunger and food waste in the UK. https://lnkd.in/en5FJt_r https://lnkd.in/et4P2Vqm #ChildHunger #FoodWaste #MealsAndMore #FelixProject #FoodPoverty

With food banks all across Aotearoa struggling to meet rising need and putting caps on the number of parcels they distribute, now is the time to get behind Food Rescue. Rescuing food is one of the most cost effective ways to deliver food relief. With a social return on investment of $4.50 for every $1 put in, it’s money well spent. And rescued food is more likely to include fresh vegetables, fruit, and dairy making parcels healthier for families. Members of the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance not only provide food directly to people, they also supply food banks and community organisations. It’s not right that people go hungry in a country that feeds 40 million people and wastes 1/3 of the food it produces. There’s so much we need to do to change that. Supporting food rescue gets runs on the board now.

📢📢📢 According to a new FFFC poll, four in five (80%) citizens believe healthy food is something that everyone should be able to have, yet only 8% think it is affordable to most people. 📢📢📢 Working at the Soil Association, it's part of my job to be aware of the food crisis we are facing nationwide. However, this research (linked in comments) really brought that challenge home to me. ⁉ How do we fix the wild disparity between people's desire to eat healthily and sustainably and the reality that good food is inaccessible to many of us?⁉ Our upcoming project, #organicforall, aims to make organic food (i.e., healthy food that is produced in harmony with nature and climate) #affordable, #available, and #accessible for all. It should be a right, not a privilege, and it is possible. From 18th April to 25th April, we will be fundraising through the Big Give to make good food the easy choice. Importantly, for that week only, all donations will be doubled ⏫. Please do support us, for the climate, for nature, for all.

In our vision of a more sustainable food system, everyone has access to nutritious food and all food goes to its highest outcome. But that’s not yet reality in the U.S. One in seven people are food insecure in America, a stat that’s increased 30% in just the past year. At the same time, 33% of all food in the U.S.—78 million tons—went to waste or was lost in the fields in 2022 according to ReFED. It’s easy to get discouraged by those numbers, but we see it as an opportunity to tackle both problems at once—not just on #HungerActionDay but every day. We partner with more than 60 food banks and pantries and local food access organizations leading the work of serving and feeding our neighbors day in and day out. Over the past year, we’ve helped provide more than 1.5 million meals* to people facing hunger through our partnership with Feeding America. And in 2023, Misfits Market donated over 6 million pounds of food through our 60+ community partners around our facilities. To learn more about the amazing work of our partners and how you can fight hunger just by shopping with us, head to our new Food Access page: https://lnkd.in/eqvApez2 #HungerActionMonth *$1 helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks.
