🚨🚨 BRACKET ALERT: Pell Enrollment🚨🚨: What if the colleges that enrolled the most low-income students won the most basketball games? When thinking about equity and access to a college education, policymakers often consider Pell Grants - federal grants given to undergraduates from low-income families - as a major tool in the fight for affordability. We decided to put together a March Madness Bracket that predicts basketball wins based on which colleges enroll the most Pell Grant recipients. More Pell Grant recipients enrolled? More wins. Some perennial basketball powers - Duke, UNC, UConn, and Kentucky - don't even make it to Sweet Sixteen. No. 1 seed Houston does very well and makes the final four, along with BYU and Texas. Oft-maligned Grand Canyon, however, enrolls over 28,000 Pell Grant recipients each year, soundly beating Houston in the final. Grand Canyon has about 10,000 more Pell Grant recipients enrolled than the previous seven NCAA MBB teams to win the championship - UConn, Kansas, Baylor, Virginia, Villanova, UNC, and Duke - combined.

In this piece, I explore how NIL deals have incentivized players to stay in college longer, develop their skills, and build their personal brands. This shift has led to a more experienced and competitive March Madness, with upperclassmen now leading the charge. This is evident in the Final Four, which features veteran talent, particularly in the two prominent big men, DJ Burns and Zach Edey, both of whom are seniors. I also examine how the increased opportunities for players in college have diminished the appeal of the G League Ignite, ultimately leading to its shutdown. Key points: NIL deals have given players a reason to stay in college and monetize their brands. More experienced players are now dominating March Madness and finding incentives to avoid a fast paced track to the NBA. Some potentially exciting news for Florida high school athletes is on the horizon. 📍 TAMPA, Fla. - the Florida High School Athletic Association (#FHSAA) introduced a groundbreaking proposal that could change the game for student-athletes across the state. This new draft which will be voted on on Tuesday, 6/4, would allow high schoolers in the state to take advantage of their #NIL through endorsements, social media, ads, and more. 📜 According to the proposal, student-athletes will have the opportunity to earn money, but there are important guidelines: ❌ No use of school names or uniforms in NIL deals. 👨👩👦 Parents must handle all NIL negotiations. 🚫 Certain products like alcohol, vaping, gambling, and weapons are off-limits for NIL deals. 💬However, this proposal isn’t without controversy. Some worry that NIL money could impact the integrity of high school sports, causing players to transfer schools for better deals. To address this, the FHSAA draft includes strict transfer rules and penalties for breaking NIL guidelines. Many believe it's only a matter of time before NIL is allowed for high schoolers in Florida given the state's propensity of producing high level college (and professional) athletes. Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports wrote about next week's NCAA Convention in Phoenix. A key focus area of the article and of next week's conference will be NCAA President Charlie Baker's "Project Division I" which proposes seismic shifts in the college sports landscape: 1️⃣ Paving the way for athletes to engage in NIL deals and receive augmented educational benefits. 2️⃣ Establishment of a new FBS subdivision requiring schools to deposit into a trust $30,000 per athlete for half of a school’s athletes. 3️⃣ Anticipated yearlong process, with initial focus on NIL and educational benefits. The timeline targets next January’s NCAA convention for action on the new subdivision structure. 4️⃣ Robust discussions on abolishing the year-in-residency penalty, elevating academic eligibility requirements, and implementing financial penalties for schools that don’t meet academic benchmarks. This week's college hoops action is yet again another reminder that if you want it bad enough, you can achieve it. Four of the top five teams lost this week. It's only January, so if this week is any indication, it's going to be fun to watch the parity play out. Hoops is in my blood. Started playing when I was maybe 11 or 12 shooting hoops with a soccer ball in my neighbor's driveway, because they weren't home yet, and I left my basketball in their garage. That rolled into numerous days and evenings on the playground. Not the playground one thinks of today, but "the playground"..... a full court anywhere....didn't matter where. You showed up, put a team together with who was there, called "next" and went after it. Winners stayed on the court. Losers were out until their "next" came up again. Nothing better! This carried on through high school and into college. Where it ended for me is where it was the best. Nothing beats college athletics - regardless of sport. Put aside the "business" it has become today, and you have a team of young women or men who are playing for their school - for the spirit of the game - to win at all costs. Sports is life. Sports is business. The transferable nature of it is deafening. Nebraska, Central Florida, Iowa State and Mississippi State believed they could win. Just because Purdue, Kansas, Houston and Tennessee were ranked meant nothing. Their one goal was too win. And, if you give an underdog a reason to believe can they win, and if they stay close enough, that belief turns into confidence, and a knowing they will beat you (another business lesson for another day). It's four basketballl games, yes, but it's a quadruple set of outcomes that exemplifies that your dreams are achieveable, whether short term or long term. Just believe in yourself and lean on your family. Like it or not, the wave is coming. High School NIL will be bigger than NCAA NIL. Are we prepare to manage the flood of challenges that come with NIL? What support has been put in place? I hear daily from HS coaches and administrators that they will not support NIL and that it does not affect them. State, Indiana, and Kentucky have the biggest venues used for college basketball games, but are they the most suited for college basketball fans and the college basketball culture..Some of the smaller arenas at Duke, Penn, and Butler have that old prestige and old school feel of college basketball and don't have the luxury suites..Some players like when the fans are near the court to cheer them on..Some arenas are not built that way..Some arenas are built to host hockey games and concerts and not just for basketball..The dimensions and feel for a hockey game is different than basketball..#eventmanagement #facilitymanagement #sportbusiness #marketing #hospitality 🏀 🗑 💺 🏟 📣 🆚 🏚 🏫
