12 months ago today I decided to leave the security of a job and a salary and take a leap into launching a new company to bring together communities in Life Sciences. Together with my Co-Founder Chris Kilbee, we setup Life Science Networks and launched the PharmaSource community - which has become my full-time role and passion ever since. We started by meeting in a BrewDog with very little. No existing audience or brand to leverage, no websites or technology, and crucially no investment to get started. Fast forward 12 months of bootstrapping, over 70+ podcasts and a lot of hard work, we’ve now got to a point where we have nurtured a really valuable community - BioPharma professionals with circa $200 Billion USD buying power - and have assembled a small but brilliant team to deliver our first event. In between those two points there have been some wonderful moments, some terrifying moments and more pivots and learnings in 12 months than my last 20 years put together. I believe there's never been a better time to launch something than right now. On a personal level, cutting out commuting and wasting time in meetings has helped me be a more present father + husband too, for which I’ll always be grateful! Looking forward to seeing where the next 12 months takes us!

I had the good fortune to attend Gen Con LLC 2024 this year as an event host, and I ended up getting more out of it than I'd expected. I was able to get some gaming in, as one does, but I think that the most impactful event I attended was the panel titled "Imposter in the Room." Anya Combs - Games Consultant moderated the panel, which featured Jay Foster from Swole Initiative, Kelly McLaughlin from the Dungeon Dudes, Kyle Shire from Critical Role, and Alicia Figliuolo from Geek Therapeutics. These incredibly generous individuals shared their perspectives on feelings of inadequacy and anxiety surrounding their work in content creation or on high-performing and high-visibility teams. One of the things that really struck me was the way that introductions were handled. The moderator departed from convention by having the panelists introduce one another instead of themselves. This did a fantastic job setting the stage for the panel, as it prevented any participant from underselling themselves in their intro and disrupting the idea of being an imposter from the start. This adjustment led me to my biggest takeaway from the panel: character always matters. While conducting intros, an appropriate amount of due diligence was performed to ensure that the audience knew what projects everyone was attached to. However, most of the time was spent on what kind of relationships each individual had fostered and what the introducee really meant to the introducer. Friendships and shared hardships were conveyed, and it was the quality of the person, not just the hustle or the work ethic, that was highlighted. Expertise is crucial. To move forward, a company needs motivated, competent people who are experts in their respective fields. However, what people remember most is how we treat them. Kindness and empathy will go a long way. This leads to my other big takeaway: that applies to how we treat ourselves, too. The panelists shared some tips and advice on countering nasty reviews and comments, negative self-talk, and feelings of inadequacy. A lot of it, though, was the affirmation that they still struggle, and that's as okay as it can be. Everyone is going to have those days where they're out of emotional and mental resources, and as a result, they handle things in a way that may not be optimal. The same empathy we show to those around us can and should be provided to ourselves. Even when we are the hardest person to be kind to.

Last week, Bristol Myers Squibb announced that they'll lay off 2,200 people to save $1.5 billion. This is bad news for the whole industry and a trend we've seen during the last year. The after-Covid era is tough for pharma leaders. Some people I'm talking to are completely disoriented: they're world-class experts on their topic and have to bounce back on their own for the first time in their whole careers.
