As National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaches, we must deepen our understanding of Turtle Island’s history and the ongoing impacts of Eurocentric colonization and genocide on Indigenous communities. This day is a crucial reminder to educate ourselves, uplift Indigenous voices, and support their stories of resilience and healing. It’s a time to acknowledge the profound loss of innocent lives—both those already uncovered and the thousands yet to be found. We must also remember that the deliberate oppression and cultural genocide experienced by Indigenous communities is not a relic of the past. The effects of colonialism continue to shape the lives of Indigenous families and survivors today, reminding us of the urgent need for justice and healing. We’ve curated a selection of books by Indigenous authors that speak to truth, reconciliation, and healing. These works offer valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of Indigenous peoples, helping us all to contribute to a more just and equitable society. We also encourage you to read/re-read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action; learn about Indigenous History and the Residential School system; Identify the territory where you live; actively listen and learn to Indigenous communities and elders. 👉🏽 Swipe and save these books as we continue to educate and liberate. ________ #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousVoices #SupportIndigenousAuthors #NationalDayForTruth #AmplifyIndigenousStories #GTBG #TurtleIsland

✨EVERY CHILD MATTERS ✨ As a member of the Canadian society built upon the colonization and marginalization of Indigenous peoples, I recognize my personal responsibility to listen, learn, and actively work towards truth and reconciliation. It is crucial that we acknowledge the ongoing impact of colonization on Indigenous communities and use our privilege and power to not only bring awareness, but actively challenge and dismantle systems, language and mindsets that allow for further oppression of the Indigenous Peoples and their communities. We must educate ourselves on the history of colonization, the trauma inflicted upon Indigenous peoples, and the continued systemic and institutional barriers they face. We must not also rely on those who continue to experience oppression to be the ones to guide us in the right direction- THAT IS FOR US TO DO. It is not enough to simply be aware of these injustices; we must actively work towards dismantling the systems and structures that perpetuate them. Today and every other day, I stand in solidarity with my Indigneous Brothers and Sisters. #TruthAndReconciliation #ListenAndLearn #AcknowledgeImpact #BringAwareness #EducateForChange #DismantleColonialSystems #StandWithIndigenous #AmplifyVoices #AdvocateForRights #SupportSelfDetermination #ChallengeColonialNarratives #CreateInclusiveSociety #JusticeForIndigenous #SolidarityForChange #UpliftMarginalizedVoices #CollectiveEffortForEquity #FutureRootedInJustice

On March 30, 2023, the Vatican rejected the 15th-century #DiscoveryDoctrine, which aimed to justify the colonial-era seizure of Indigenous lands. Despite this rejection, reparative measures and extensive land returns to #IndigenousPeoples are still needed to address the lasting harm caused by the Doctrine. The ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic oppression faced by #IndigenousPeoples worldwide underscore the need for continued efforts toward healing and restorative justice. #EverythingBack #Healing #RestorativeJustice #LandBack #CulturalSurvival

Understanding the Broken Treaties: The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 The history of Native American treaties is filled with broken promises, with the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 being a significant example. This treaty was meant to bring peace between the United States and the Lakota/Dakota/Nakota Nation by establishing the Great “Sioux” Reservation, including the Black Hills. However, the discovery of gold in the Black Hills led to an influx of settlers, and the U.S. government subsequently violated the treaty, seizing the land and forcing the Sioux people into smaller reservations. Impact on Native Communities: 1. Loss of Ancestral Lands: The “Sioux” lost access to the Black Hills, a sacred area central to their cultural and spiritual practices. 2. Economic Hardship: The loss of land and resources has had lasting economic impacts, contributing to the high poverty rates seen in many Native American communities in South Dakota today. 3. Cultural Erosion: Forced relocations and loss of traditional lands have disrupted cultural continuity and heritage. Impact on Broader Society: 1. Historical Injustice: The broken treaty represents a broader pattern of broken promises that contribute to distrust and strained relationships between Native American tribes and the U.S. government. 2. Ongoing Legal Battles: The “Sioux” Nation continues to fight for the return of their lands or fair compensation, highlighting issues of justice and restitution that are still unresolved. 3. Educational Awareness: Understanding these historical injustices is crucial for fostering greater empathy and driving policy changes that respect and honor Native American rights. Moving Forward? To truly address the injustices of the past, we must look beyond the inadequate settlement offers of the 20th century. Instead, we could: - Disregard the 20th-Century Settlement: Acknowledge that previous settlements do not fully compensate for the loss of sacred lands and cultural disruption. - Allocate Funds from Tourism Profits: Use revenue generated from tourism in areas like the Black Hills to directly support Native tribes. This can help decrease poverty and homelessness by providing resources for housing, education, and economic development. By learning about and acknowledging these broken treaties and taking concrete actions to address their impacts, we can work towards a more equitable future for all. Let’s commit to supporting my people’s communities and advocating for policies that honor their rights and heritage. #NativeAmericanHistory #FortLaramieTreaty #IndigenousRights #HistoricalJustice #CulturalHeritage
