🔍 How does internal mobility impact your organisation’s success? Internal mobility, the practice of moving employees to new roles within the same company, has recently seen a 30% increase. Yet, only 33% of organisations have formal programmes, and just one in five employees feel confident about making an internal move. Here’s why you should care: 🔹 More Leadership Promotions Companies with high internal mobility rates see 79% more leadership promotions per employee. Leaders developed internally bring invaluable institutional knowledge to their new roles. 🔹 Longer Employee Tenure Employees who make internal moves have 53% longer tenures. They’re more likely to stay where they see growth opportunities, boosting long-term retention. 🔹 Increased Engagement in Learning Organisations with high internal mobility enjoy 17% greater learner engagement. Upskilling becomes vital, especially when external candidates are scarce or too costly. 🔹 Investing in internal mobility enhances leadership pipelines and retention and fosters a culture of continuous learning and development. What’s your experience with internal mobility? Have you seen these benefits in your organisation? It is intriguing to see companies struggling to enhance engagement, but applying the same old strategy that used to work before, to solve new problems. Yet, differently from what the article suggests, I believe that’s not only on leaders’ responsibility to move the needle. I trust we all need to face the crude reality in order to be able to act. Sometimes, I realize that part of the challenge with talent comes from the fact that leaders and individual contributors alike fear to talk about the “elephant in the room”. Instead, they keep avoiding the reality by creating more engaging tools, and looking the other way. As far as this article shares, it is not working out.

Internal mobility is a powerful strategy that can significantly boost employee retention, career satisfaction, and overall productivity. Yet, many companies still struggle to harness its full potential. Research from LHH reveals that only 8% of employees actively seek internal opportunities, often because organisations overlook their current talent pool in favour of external candidates. To reverse this trend, companies should prioritise support for all the ways careers can grow within the company. By offering varied growth pathways, career coaching, mentorship programs, leadership training, and "gig" assignments, businesses can cultivate a pipeline of capable leaders while also providing employees with the tools they need to grow and succeed internally. My colleague Jonathan Firth, Vice President of LHH Recruitment Solutions, further discusses strategies for boosting internal mobility in this piece in HR Magazine. #Leadership #InternalMobility #CareerSatisfaction
