To celebrate the conclusion of this year’s Global Week of Volunteering, Goodyear’s Americas Leadership team hosted a card-making event for the patients of Akron Children’s Hospital.
From sharing well-wishes to artfully drawing cartoons, associates enjoyed getting creative for a cause. Goodyear also had the opportunity to hear from a Children’s Miracle Family who shared their story about the hospital’s positive impact on their lives. And a special furry friend Lucy, member of the hospital’s Doggie Brigade, joined in on the fun, too.
Goodyear is a corporation that always violates the rights of its workers. After they provide their years of service, they leave them on the street without paying them for their years of service.... It is a corporation that takes advantage of its workers. I lost 21 years of services and when Goodyear Tire company Venezuela closed its Production operations, it left us on the street without paying us our money for Years of services. Teamwork makes the dream work! It’s amazing how bringing in the right person at the right time can drive immediate and broad positive impact on an organization (and our community). 🙌🏻 Sarah Golman
In talking with a community stakeholder this week, he shared his goal of creating lifelong employment opportunities for A+ talent in the Dallas Jewish nonprofit community. Nonprofit work is rooted in the “soft stuff” like heart, mission alignment, and compassion. Taking this role after a 15 year career in financial services, I thought I was already prepared for the “tough stuff” but I have never worked with a team so open to big change, focused on driving positive results for our stakeholders, and relentless about collaborating across the community to bring deep impact and support for those who need it most.
Yes, it takes a big heart to bring your A+ game to this sector - but it requires grit, intellect, and determination, too. To attract and retain top talent, it demands investment.
If you’re a donor or a board member of a nonprofit organization, consider endowing resources to fund the costliest roles in the agency you love. Similar to endowing a chair at a university, this creates operational flexibility and ensures that the organization can attract A+ talent no matter what’s going on in the market and environment around you.
To my fellow nonprofit sector friends: how are you attracting and retaining A+ talent?? ⤵️
COO APPRECIATION POST: Not even 90 days into her role, Sarah Golman has hit the ground running! When she’s not knee deep in negotiations with our construction project partners (we’re moving in March!), she’s building out processes and formalizing procedures, planning team building events (we are so excited about Gardenuity) and making sure our trustees, donors, and nonprofit agency partners are maximizing their impact on our community (she wrote our first ever impact report, and has been a critical partner in numerous new programs). On top of all that, she’s a super mom, community volunteer, and wife to Brett Golman.
Hats off to Sarah!! We 💙 you!
As a parent, you always hope to see your children grow into individuals who make a positive difference. Seeing Arden recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the San Diego Business Journal Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards is, of course, a proud moment. But what’s even more fulfilling is watching the impact of his nonprofit, Sports4Kids-CA, unfold. For two years, he’s worked tirelessly to bring sports opportunities to kids who might not otherwise have access. 🏀⚽
Just yesterday, I stopped by one of his sessions at a local elementary school. Watching 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders—whom don’t have regular PE classes in their schools—get their only physical activity for the week was both heartwarming and eye-opening. It’s easy to overlook how something as simple as a weekly soccer or basketball session can make a difference, but the science backs it up. 📊
According to a study published (https://lnkd.in/g2FymJ3H ) in PLOS ONE (with over 11,000 children aged 9-13), participation in team sports leads to:
🔵 10% lower anxiety and depression scores
🔵 19% lower withdrawal and depression scores
🔵 17% lower social problems
🔵 12% fewer attention problems
🔵 20% fewer instances of rule-breaking behavior
In a world where mental health challenges are rising at an alarming rate, especially among youth, providing access to sports may seem like a small thing. But over time, these small, consistent efforts can change lives—physically, mentally, and emotionally. 🌱
What might start as just a game can evolve into something much more: a foundation for resilience, confidence, and long-term well-being.
When you consider the percentages from the study—those 10%, 20% reductions in mental health challenges—applied across schools, communities, and generations, the potential impact is enormous. These small actions, when repeated over time, can accumulate and create lifelong benefits for children and, ultimately, healthier, stronger communities. 💪
Thank you to everyone who has supported Arden—and to all who work tirelessly to make a difference in young lives. 🙏

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by the San Diego Business Journal Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards. Volunteering has always been a passion of mine, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to give back to our community through initiatives that support and uplift others.
A big thank you to everyone who’s supported me along the way, especially the incredible teams and organizations I’ve had the privilege to work with. This award isn’t just a personal achievement—it’s a reflection of the collective effort and dedication of everyone involved.
Special thanks to Drew Moser, Greg Anglea, Serhat Pala, and Zeynep Ilgaz.
Excited to keep making a positive impact!

That’s a wrap on the Philanthropy Australia conference!
What an absolutely inspiring few days spent learning from the best. Incredible keynotes from Safeena Husain and Andy Bryant, bringing international development to the main stage. And ending the conference with a brilliant session on trust based philanthropy, moderated by Evelyn Omala, with Isabelle Kamariza’s story taking center stage!
It was an honor to serve RaiseUp Families as their Executive Director for nearly 4 years. In that time, the organization experienced unprecedented growth:
✅ Expanded Board of Directors by 50%
✅ Doubled the number of families (clients) being served
✅ Client outcomes improved by 100% (average income increase in signature 9-month HandUp program went from 35% - 71%)
✅ Client graduation rate improved from 80% to 91%
✅ Revenue growth from $450,000 to $1,000,015 (donations from private sources)
These outcomes are a result of the Board of Directors and staff working together towards a common goal, each person utilizing their unique skills and abilities in their individual role to help the bus arrive at its desired destination. They are the result of hours and hours of innovation, hard work, and determination.
As RaiseUp Families celebrates its 30th Anniversary of stabilizing families from vulnerable communities who face unexpected financial crises so their children can focus on their education, giving them the opportunity for a better life, it needs a full-time leader with passion, vision, and experience to lead it forward.
I could not be happier that Kate Yadan will pick up this torch and lead RaiseUp into the future!
"We know that change is a natural part of life, and those who embrace it grow while those who do not slowly die, metaphorically. Two of the largest obstacles to change are ego and pride. Moving out of our own way is the toughest battle most of us will face. Giving up our seat for someone else, stepping down when it's time for someone else to step up, and gracefully exiting when we have added all the value we can, are what we should all strive for." -Angela Burgess, Are You on the Right Bus?
We are THRILLED to annouce a big change at RaiseUp Families! After a rigorous search, Kate Yadan was named our newest Executive Director as of March 1, 2024! Kate's knowledge and experience are unparalleled, and more importantly, her passion for stabilizing families from vulnerable communities so their children have the opportunity for a brighter future knows no bounds.
We are incredibly grateful to Angela Burgess for sharing her vision and leadership with our clients, our staff, our board of directors, and our community over the last four years and wish her well in her future endeavors!
Come out and welcome Kate at our 2024 RaiseUp Families Graduation Celebration! Sponsorships and Tickets are on sale now:

I recently visited a local food bank. It is a food bank that picks up produce at a local grocery store.
They used to pickup meats near expiration too. They have freezers and as an under-supplied, overburdened food bank, the need is definitely present.
In the last six months the same grocery store stopped discounting meats to 50% and started only discounting them to 30%. I know for a fact this has led to greater discard of expired meat. They no longer allow the food bank to pick up near expiration meats.
People who wouldn’t be able to afford those foods in the first place, imaginary profits and losses that never existed are their “reasoning” for throwing food away instead.
People in need are not the enemy. People in need aren’t hoarding their money greedily and eagerly waiting at the donation doors.
The (potential) merger of Albertsons and Fred Meyer terrifies me. They’re already coordinating their sales to justify “see we’re competing with each other and will keep doing so if you let us merge”
What all shoppers have realized? Their prices were heavily inflated since first word of this merger to allow “sales” that don’t lose them a penny. Grocery prices are already unattainable for many and only worsening.

In the case of all social good movements - it's grassroots organizations banding together and communities supporting one another that is going to shift cultural attitudes. At Replate, we think of other nonprofit FROs as potential collaborators, not our competition! A rising tide lifts all ships!

Are you looking to get on a board? Many people ask me how to start their board journey. The answer is simple: get involved and volunteer on nonprofit boards, and advisory boards. Building the muscle that is needed to participate in larger board opportunities is key. Of course, getting formal education on board rules and etiquette is also a plus.
Consider these guidelines from Harvard when evaluating any board opportunity.
- What is the company’s mission and purpose?
- What is the board’s role in the organization?
- What are the expectations for board members?
- Who are the other board members and what is their experience?
- What is the organization’s financial status?
- What is the level of engagement of the board?
- What is the board and CEO’s relationship?
- What is the organization’s reputation?
Remember, volunteering on a nonprofit board or advisory board is a great way to get started. Build your skills and experience, and who knows where it could lead.
