Getting your foot in the door with investors is challenging for most startups, but sealing the deal may be tougher. But, with the right approach, your startup could be the next big success story like Cornershop (now Ubereats). In our recent session, Michael Kennedy, a financial advisor from CIBC, provided crucial advice to the founders participating in the Hamilton-Niagara Bootcamp. This includes building trust, presenting a credible financial history (and projection), and having a clear business plan that answers the 'how' and 'when.' He also emphasized that receiving a 'no' doesn't always signal the end and shared some often overlooked yet vital points: ➡️Understand the investors' business processes: How many yearly investments do they make? What is the size of their fund? Are you speaking to a decision-maker? ➡️Keep them informed about company milestones: Regular updates on achievements matter. ➡️ Engage in networking events: Investors often seek out innovative startups at conferences and networking gatherings. ➡️Lastly, a thank-you message goes a long way!

What is a startup? A startup is a temporary organization built to search for the solution to a problem, and in the process to find a repeatable, scalable and profitable business model that is designed for incredibly fast growth. The defining characteristic of a startup is that of experimentation — in order to have a chance of survival every startup has to be good at performing the experiments that are necessary for the discovery of a successful business model. And as Professor Clayton Christensen puts it; Startups should be "impatient for profits AND patient for growth" . . . Which is just a fancy, academic way of saying, "first nail it, AND THEN AND ONLY THEN, scale it." Terri Burns, 26, the youngest partner in GV (Google Ventures)’s history and its first Black female partner, is launching her firm, Type Capital according to Fortune. Burns’ firm will aim to have checks written without signals from other investors: “I want to move quickly and move efficiently and not over-index on heat.” Through this approach, Burns intends to eliminate the over-dependence on market trends and focus on genuine innovation. Type Capital is in its early stages. It focuses on pre-seed and seed investments, particularly in areas like digital consumer platforms, developer tools, and AI. It is especially interested in ventures led by Gen Z founders. Her strategy is geared towards finding and supporting founders before they become widely recognized in the VC ecosystem. “Not being super caught up in this ecosystem of heat that is really popular right now is the path to winning, and also the path to more collaboration and respect from founders,” said Burns. #google #venturecapital #diveristy #news #tech https://lnkd.in/gDNFGGpc
