Is the Shiloh Shepherd a Purebred? Alaska Dog Works has been getting a lot of questions lately about the Shiloh Shepherd. Is it a purebred? No. It is a cross breed recognized since the early 1990s. Is it recognized by the American Kennel Club? No, but it is recognized any the American Rare Breed Association. Why breed dogs that are not purebreds? The American Kennel’s mission to to breed and promote responsible breedings that uphold to THEIR standards. While the AKC is the most recognizable organization for dog breeds, it does not mean they are the only one. What is a purpose bred dog? As far back as 20,000 years ago humans have been breeding dogs for a purpose. Some are crossed with other breeds to improve performance, function, health, etc. Others are bred just to be our companions. Even for the fastest Animal on Land, speed is not enough. I was watching a documentary a few days ago of the Cheetah and the Gazelle and I was amazed at the strategy of both animals. In the wild, everyone understands its strengths and weaknesses and knows how to use them to their advantage. We all know that the Cheetah is the fastest animal on Land but how can it not hunt down a gazelle? At first, when the Cheetah took off in the chase, I was so fascinated by its speed and to make it so beautiful to watch, the camera captured the event from the top. It was a drone shot and I was rooting for the cheetah to get the prey… But the Gazelle is smart and has a better strategy than that of the Cheetah. You see… Cheetah might be the fastest animal but it can only maintain its top speed for just a few seconds. What this means is that Cheetahs cannot run fast for long. It has less endurance at top speed. That's why for it to hunt successfully it has to get close to its prey up to 30 meters before the chase. The Gazelle, on the other hand, has endurance, agility, stamina, and drift more than the Cheetah. The Gazelle understands that it cannot outrun the Cheetah if it runs on a straight line so it uses drifting backed-up with its great stamina to escape the mighty speed of the Cheetah. It was such a beautiful scene to watch. I was disappointed but also delighted to watch the mind-blowing strategy of the Gazelle. Cheetahs are faster but direction switch is an overwhelming factor gazelle uses. What is the lesson here? If you want to win the race in this 2024 and beyond speed is not enough. Soon a lot of people will run out of energy and forget their year plans. January is always that month when everyone is moving so fast with their goals but as we get to Match and April, many will fall out. Know yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
