Starting a business can feel like walking a tightrope, where every step—every decision—seems to have the weight of the world on it. Each new opportunity could either be a tremendous success or a potential pitfall. But as time passes and our businesses grow, we gain insight into our true capabilities and what our ventures can handle. We learn, adapt, and grow stronger. Heard this in my first meeting of the day! “Wise man learns from his mistakes, Wiser man learns from the mistakes of others, The one who has all of the answers and who knows everything, is the fool in the room. “ One of the many reasons I love mentoring the next generation of investors and entrepreneurs because if they take the opportunity to learn from the silly things I’ve done they will be better for it. One of my peers in my role before joining Allied Federal Solutions LLC always used a term from the Bible of “Seek Wise Counsel” which I’m getting better at but always have room to grow. In this new role I’m getting to learn from some brilliant corporate officers on how to build culture, build the right team, and how to serve your team. Onward and upward.

I used to scoff at things like mission, vision, and values. "Come on, be serious," I would think. That's fluffy BS. But I've come to realize how integral they are to ensuring everyone on the team understands why we're here and how we operate. And that there's a clear explanation for newcomers when they join our team of what they will be joining. It's not just important to have them either. It's important how they're created. And how they're protected through our day to day management. Which behaviors and norms we reinforce, and which we do not, are critical to a high performing team.
