Last week, I had the chance to participate in Velocity #VC24. Dorothea Schaffner presented an outlook to our work in the #SESPIN project; I presented in a Masterclass on speed-pedelecs organized by Dagmar Köhler from Mobycon, together with Martina Lohmeier and Jan Pelckmans. FHNW's presentations were part of the ongoing #SESPIN project with Salzburg Research and WIVW. Velo-city, in contrast to more academic conferences, includes participants from cycling advocacy groups, ministries, provinces, cantons, municipalities, bike-sharing companies – and only the occasional academic researcher. The breadth of topics at the conference shows that to further promote cycling, it is: ✅ Necessary to have support at the highest levels: including cycling in long-term European infrastructural plans, national plans and regulations for bicycles on trains on an European level are just a few examples. ✅ Important to support bottom-up initiatives to gain backing for change and provide different messages to different target groups: there is no single solution. Where some might be attracted to the vision of a calm and quieter street, others could be convinced to cycling because it is more affordable than other modes of transport. ✅ Essential to measure the effect of policy measures, including assessments of network quality, counts, and subjective safety. High-tech and low-tech measuring is both a solution; prefer consistency over time instead of intensity when collecting data. ✅ Vital to recognize that in addition to cycling, other modes of sustainable transport serve different population groups and help create inclusive mobility. #Ghent offered an amazing backdrop to the conference, where cyclists can be found from all ages and abilities. The Ghent circulation plan was one of several examples that demonstrated what is possible with the vision and will to transform a city in just over a decade. Many thanks for all the exchanges Ben Abelshausen Julian Baker Ingrid Boelens Bart Dubelaar Laurent Dutheil Yvonne Ehrensberger April Marshke, MBA Michael Liebi Martin Loidl Nikolaas Van den Steen and many others.

🚲 At the recent Advisory Group meeting of the MegaBITS project, an engaging discussion unfolded around Floating Bike Data (FBD). One key takeaway was that members and partners agreed that the first priority is to find out how Floating Bike Data (FBD) can be used to get insights that support our cycling policies. It became clear that authorities first want to know how it can be used, and what type of Floating Bike Data is needed per use case. Standards for FBD might not be a priority for cities and regions, but will still be useful. Read more interesting insights from the recent discussion on Floating Bike Data in the article below. #MegaBITS #FloatingBikeData #BikeData #InterregNorthSea #InterregEurope

📲 🚴♂️ What is Floating Bike Data? How can it help build a more complete picture about cycling trips in your city? During our session 'Data-Driven Cycling: Maximizing the Benefits of Floating Bike Data' CIE communications coordinator Sofie Neven moderated the session with expert panellists Robin Kleine, Project Manager for MegaBITS_EU and representative of Provincie Overijssel/Mobycon, Alex Pazuchanics, Head of Mobility Intelligence at Vianova I/O, Jeroen Nijhuis, Director of Dynamic Traffic Management at Gemeente Enschede, 🚲 Thomas Knights 🏃🏻♂️Senior Manager Partnerships & Marketing at Strava Metro as they discussed the potential of Floating Bike Data and smart cycling. Floating Bike Data has the potential to provide valuable data for city planners and policy makers on the trips and trace data that cyclists in their city or region make. This data can help inform better infrastructure planning, routing and even traffic management for cyclists. Floating bike data will bring a layer of accuracy and granularity to cycling that has never been achieved before. Follow our MegaBITS_EU project for more information and updates on this subject too. #CyclingIndustriesEurope #MegaBITS #VC24

🚴♂️ Frequent stops on cycle routes, especially at traffic lights, significantly diminish the attractiveness of cycling. They consume energy and time, leading to a less enjoyable experience. 🚦 The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) suggests key strategies to tackle this issue. Reducing stops per kilometer and waiting times are crucial. A great example is the "green wave" synchronized for 20 km/h, effectively reducing delays at traffic lights and enhancing the cycling journey. 🛣️ Our personal experiences confirm these findings. Smoother, less interrupted routes are clearly more enjoyable. Next time you're cycling, think about your route. Aren't the paths with fewer stops the ones you prefer? 📸: Credit: EFC. In the Netherlands, around 40% of train passengers arrive by bicycle. In order to make cycling a sensible transport option, urban development should be oriented around public transport nodes, so that people can walk or cycle to the station.
