TechNet has been advocating alongside our partners, the Consumer Technology Association, the Alliance For Automotive Innovation, and the Zero Emission Transportation Association, against a harmful mandate to require AM radios in every vehicle. Ultimately, a mandate would slow EV deployment across the country and increase consumer costs. Analog AM radios are highly susceptible to interference from electric motors, safety sensors, and even cell phones. To mitigate interference, manufacturers must install shielding, adding unnecessary costs and weight to the vehicle. Even with shielding, there is likely to still be interference. Also, automakers are working to ensure customers can still access AM programming through advanced infotainment systems. This is a solution in search of a problem and ultimately undermines American automotive innovation.
