ICYMI: Aimee Grace Mitchell is using the GPS model to help refugees recover from the trauma of war and forced displacement, and rebuild their lives in a new country. The founder of Places to Thrive said GPS’ unique approach to group dynamics—specifically, creating a space where people can share without advice or interruption—was key to getting participants to really open up about their experiences: “As I watched people share, I was blown away. As people talked, it was as if they were exhaling for the first time in a long time,” Mitchell said. “As a clinician I’d never really thought about what it means to listen but not give advice in a group. But based on what I witnessed in the groups, I think it’s incredibly liberating for people.” More: [bit.ly/4dqQuiV]<http://bit.ly/4dqQuiV> #PeerSupport #MentalHealth

When approaching an Indigenous community expect that you’ll need to properly inform, consult, involve, collaborate and empower each other to achieve success. Indigenous peoples are often asked to provide their time and are contacted by multiple institutions. Keep in mind you’ll need to: ✔Build a program or initiative with the support of the community before you begin planning. Avoid bringing a developed plan to a community or nation unless they have asked for it. ✔ Have clear intentions. ✔ Plan time for visiting and relationship-building. ✔ Understand that many First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities may have difficulty trusting non-Indigenous partners or organizations due to both historical and ongoing effects of colonial trauma. ✔ Consider reciprocity and be prepared to explain how your project or initiative benefits the community. ✔ Expect to answer questions about budget availability. #UWaterlooCoop #Coop #EDIR

We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the recent violent attacks against refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. These acts of hatred do not reflect the values of our society and threaten the very fabric of our communities. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to stand in unity with those who have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety and a better future. We must come together to reject intolerance and build a society where everyone, regardless of their background, is treated with dignity and respect. In these challenging times, the role of funders cannot be understated. It is essential that we work collaboratively to provide the necessary resources and support to all vulnerable communities. By standing together, we can counteract the forces of division and ensure that refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive. Let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering inclusion, understanding, and solidarity, and continue to build a more just and compassionate society for all. "No one is born knowing how to build positive partnerships. Rather it takes time, education and empowerment for people to become positive partners." Around the world, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) supports people in building healthy relationships and rejecting those marked by violations and violence. The Israel Emergency Grassroots Response Initiative (IEGRI) connects grassroots leaders addressing urgent needs on the ground with resources and support. More than three months have passed since the October 7 massacre in southern Israel and start of the war. Israel is now fighting on multiple fronts, including in Gaza and increasingly on the northern border. This constant and active state of war and emergency at the same time as trying to reinstate routine as much as possible is like running a marathon while learning to walk. And grassroots efforts continue to imbue humanity and a recognition of the individual into huge systemic needs. This week we’re highlighting the following needs: 1. Needs of Evacuees from the North 2. Mental Health 3. Bereaved 4. Economic Impact 5. Rehab and Disability 6. Releasing the Hostages – a top priority until all are released. Please consider giving to address these needs and others identified by bottom-up changemakers. Read more HERE: https://lnkd.in/g8W3B5Ei 🇮🇱
