It’s about that time of year when families reach out to me with questions about walking on to a college team. Often, student-athletes consider this option when they’ve been admitted to their dream college but failed to receive the recruiting interest they anticipated, fostering the hope that they can earn a spot later on. What most families don’t realize is that these types of walk-on opportunities are rare, and even when they are presented, might not be ideal for a student-athlete’s holistic development. Reimagined PD Sojourn My first days-long post-retirement road trip starts tomorrow. I'll be traveling to Olathe, Kansas to participate in #edcampJOCOKS. Along the way I'll explore small town #veteran memorials, photograph #trains (I'm a #railfan) and reflect on what the future holds, in a semi-professional way, for me. The thing about #EdCamp that encourage me to drive 1200 miles each way (Phoenix, Arizona metro) to Olathe is that I'll know no one there. As EdCamps are unconferences and so are agenda-less I can only imagine what I'll learn when I get there. I haven't been to an EdCamp since March 2020. I'm anticipating conversations about artificial intelligence, #AI, will abound. Pre-COVID I used to stream EdCamp sessions I attended for others in my PLN (Personal Learning Network) to experience, too. I don't think I'll be doing that this time. Instead, I'll focus on networking with the K-12 educators and administrators I'll meet there. My very first EdCamp was EdCampWestTexas in the fall of 2013. It made a huge difference in my career trajectory. I've since participated in at least 65 such unconferences from Washington, DC to Los Angeles, CA. Mixing it up with teachers and learning about how they engage with kids has helped me be more mindful of how to approach adult education experiences.
