Calling all maritime safety investigation professionals! The Cranfield Safety and Accident Investigation Centre is excited to deliver its Applied Marine Accident Investigation course between 5-23rd February 2024 at the Cranfield University campus 50 miles north of London. Developed in close collaboration with the maritime safety community including the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), this intense three-week course provides a practical approach to investigating marine accidents encompassing the technical, operational and human aspects of investigation. It is the perfect follow on to our three-week multimodal Fundamentals of Accident Investigation course which runs in January, May and September each year. Note that for experienced investigators, we will also consider direct entry to the Applied Marine Accident Investigation course. You will be taught be by a range experts in investigation, human performance and safety management and participate in a 5-day simulation of a marine accident which also includes a visit to the MAIB VDR laboratory. The course is suitable for investigators working for a flag state, maritime administration, ship operator, port authority or insurer and those working in both the civil and military domains. Elements covered by the course include: • International basis for marine accident investigations. • State Director of Marine Accidents' perspective. • Managing a marine accident investigation. • Marine accident site risk management. • Evidence preservation and collection strategies. • Enhanced interview techniques. • Five-day accident simulation exercise. • Accident report writing. • Working with the media. • Marine operational and engineering human factors. • Physiology, psychology and pathology in marine accidents. • Applied analysis methods. • Investigating navigational accidents. • Investigating machinery failures. • Investigating with recorded data. • Investigating ship fires and explosions. • Investigating structural & stability accidents. • Investigating marine occupational health accidents. • Visit to UK MAIB. There are hazards still out there where it is going to take an incident for us to realise it was a hazard in the first place. Investigations are crucial in finding out these lurking hazards, the ones that can take years to surface even within seemingly safe working practices. The blame culture can really get in the way of this crucial learning. In a previous life, this looks to be a very good course!
