The Delicate Dance: How Moisture and Temperature Impact Grain Storage
Grain storage might seem straightforward, but balancing moisture content and temperature is a delicate balancing act. These two factors significantly impact the longevity and quality of your stored grain. Let's delve deeper:
Moisture Matters: A Breeding Ground for Trouble
High moisture content in stored grain creates a breeding ground for microbial activity. Mold, fungi, and even insects like weevils thrive in these damp conditions. This not only leads to spoilage and quality degradation but also generates heat, further exacerbating the problem.
The Heat is On: Respiration and Spoilage
Grain is a living organism, even after harvest. It continues to respire, releasing heat and moisture. When storage temperatures are high, this respiration rate increases significantly. This not only depletes valuable nutrients within the grain but also creates ideal conditions for the aforementioned microbial villains.
The Ideal Storage Equation
So, what's the magic formula for successful grain storage? Maintaining a cool and dry environment is key.
Moisture Content: The ideal moisture content varies depending on the grain type. However, most grains require a moisture level below a specific threshold (usually around 14-16%) for safe long-term storage.
Temperature: Cooler temperatures slow down respiration and microbial activity. Maintaining consistent temperatures within a recommended range (often between 10°C and 20°C) is crucial.
Taking Action: Monitoring and Management
Regularly monitoring both moisture content and temperature is essential for proactive grain storage management. Techniques like aeration and drying can be employed to adjust these parameters if necessary.
The Bottom Line: Don't Let Your Grain Go Up in Smoke
By understanding the impact of moisture and temperature, you can ensure your grain stays healthy and maintains its quality. Remember, early detection and intervention are key to preventing spoilage and financial losses.

Thank Dr. Claus M. Braunbeck from FrigorTec for sharing his expertise with us!
Hello everyone, welcome to Grandchamp. Today we look at temperature and moisture management of grand in storage We actually Santa and when we from Santa concert. We welcome again the expert on storage, Doctor Klaus Brownback from Frigo Tech in Germany. Thank you. Yeah, hello Doctor Klaus. The topic today is temperatures and moisture management are two important task for good storage plastic and reserves. So what needs to be considered about it Doctor Klaus? Thank you very much for the invitation. Moist and warm grain has a short storage life and must be managed urgently. The first step is to measure both values temperature and moisture of the grain and decide what should happen with the grain. If there are two extreme, then it should be taken as decision to reject the grain. If it's in in trade, it it has to be kept. It's an urgent immediate actions must be taken. Both parameters are directly linked to the grain spoilage by microbes, fungi, weevils as well as high activity of the grain. What management should take place? Moist rain must be dried to a solid stage of moisture content under the consideration of the segments of the following grain management processes. There is no other way to save wet grain above 16% moisture content. If the level is lower, grain cooling can be applied to preserve the grain by cooling and by its natural drying effect. Yes, that's what already discussed earlier as some grand Jeff videos. A high temperature of grain is critical because the activity of the grain remains at high. Additional heat will arise by respiration and may escalate to a scenario like a fire at the worst case. Monitoring of grains temperature is essential for safe and reliable grain storage at any time. Only then the situation of the grain is known and applied grain management processes work properly. But how to reduce and keep a low temperature of the crane? The most common practice is to use an aeration system that blows ambient air of a reasonable temperature level and a low relative humidity through the grain bulk. That is a good way to avoid extreme high temperature inside the grain. And automation of the operation according to the measurement of grain and ambience temperature and the relative humidity is advised. But eration is limited by the ambient condition and may require a long time to condition the grain to a solid and safe stage. Indeed, the industry yield the system a lot, but it is limited in a tropical condition and have a time for usually in the warm seasons. That's why sometimes a ration fails and the temperature escalates to an extreme or even to an emergency. No time should be left to act immediately because of the risk of fire. One common practice is to circulate the grain. The and to dissipate the heat inside the grain bar. But in only efficient is this. But it is only efficient if the grain is loaded to an empty storage and returned to its first location. Only then all grain is smoothed as otherwise some grain don't move at the storage. Isn't there a safe and reliable way to avoid any temperature rises from the beginning of the story? Grain cooling is not only a way to manage moist grain as mentioned earlier, but it is the moist, most efficient way for temperature management during the storage period. It is applied from the first day. It's grain reduces its activity drastically. It is a good insulator as well. Recalling is required only occasionally once the target temperature is reached. This is the best way to manage reliable the temperature of a grain under tropical climate or at harvest condition during summer season. I would like to refer to the earlier green chat videos that explained more about green cooling and its potential to preserve grain. Thank you for sharing your insights about the temperature and moisture management of Grand during historic Data Cloud. Great pleasure, thank you for the green chat. This is definitely an interesting solution to be considered in every storage facility to safeguard your grain. Feel tight and sore all the time?
This could be because you aren’t drinking enough quality water.
Water Quantity
How much water are you supposed to drink?
Easy! The minimum amount of water per day you should be drinking is found with this simple formula:
Weight (kg) x 0.033 = Min. daily water (L)
So an 80kg person should be drinking 2.64L of water as a daily minimum.
Water Quality - Tap Water
Is drinking tap water ok? Short answer is NO.
Tap water can be composed of the following:
• Sewerage - higher percentages in cities
• Chlorine - kills all bacteria in our gut
• Sodium Fluoride - this is a poison that affects our hormones
When there is no other option, you are better having tap water then being dehydrated.
Water Quality - Filters
What is the best water filter? Short answer is ANY filter is better than none.
There are different types of filtration systems that range from a bench top, ceramic to undersink multi-stage filtration. The aim is to filter as much chlorine and fluoride as possible. Generally the more expensive the filtration system the better the filter.
Water Quality - Salt
You add salt to water?! I thought salt was bad for you? Table salt (sodium chloride) is what you want to avoid.
A pinch of Celtic Grey Sea Salt in a litre of water, is all you need. If you can taste the salt, you have added too much.
Celtic grey sea salt in water adds 80+ minerals your tissues needs to hydrate.
