When I reflect on my own early career experiences, as a new college graduate, I exhibited a strong desire to learn and the potential to grow, but I lacked the experience to prove either.
An amazing leader, who I will simply call Carmen, took a chance on me. Very likely someone did the same for you. In my case, had she not been willing to invest in unrealized potential, there is simply no way my career trajectory could have happened – she created the opportunity for the first “stone” in my career path.
This is why I am so proud that Thermo Fisher Scientific continues to be recognized as a Top 100 Internship Program by Yello.co and WayUp. This early career talent, with the right career support, are the colleagues who will carry on our powerful Mission in the decades to follow.
I often get asked what advice I have for colleagues just starting out. Here are my top five ways to make the most of this exciting time.
1. Look for opportunities that enable you to engage in things you are passionate about. As Mark Twain famously said, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
2. Be realistic – and patient – in how quickly you can add value and learn everything a role has to offer before seeking to move. Great careers are not built through instant gratification.
3. Build relationships. There is always something you can learn from others and something others can learn from you. Network with others who have successfully navigated your desired career field.
4. YOU own your career – don’t expect someone to lay it all out for you. Just as courses build toward a degree, individual roles build toward a long and lasting career. Be specific on what you should learn from each new assignment and how that will help you achieve your career ambition. Map each assignment wisely. And be open to move to where the new experiences lie.
5. Be a lifelong learner and invest in your own development daily. Read. Develop broad well-rounded perspectives. The humility and growth that occur as a result are invaluable.
