The changes that the maritime sector going through right now are so profound that it can compare to the transition from sail to steam in the 19th century. Think about the introduction of new fuels such as ammonia and methanol. The implementation of new digital solutions such as AI. The launching of autonomous or remotely operated ships. New electrical energy storage systems. And the development of molten salt reactors for ship propulsion. With this transition follows a need to upgrade and develop the competencies in the existing workforce. However, it is unclear how this can best be done and what areas are most relevant to address? Therefore I am looking very much forward to participate in the conference on supplementary education and training in the maritime sector which is co-organized by Danish Shipping and Maritime Research Alliance. At the conference practitioners from Danish shipping companies will meet with representatives from the Danish educational system to discuss exactly this topic. It is on the 29th of February 2024 in Amaliegade 33, 1254 Copenhagen. Interested in participating? Then you can find more info on the program and how to sign up below
The maritime sector is currently undergoing profound changes, such as the green transition and technological development. Consequently, there will be a growing demand for new skills and competencies. But how should continuing professional development courses be organized and which areas should they cover? To address these questions, Maritime Research Alliance and Danske Rederier are co-organizing an education conference on supplementary education and training of the future. The conference will take place on the 29th of February 2024 from 9.30-16.00 at Danish Shipping. Sign up here to secure a spot (latest 23rd of February 2024 at 9.00): https://lnkd.in/dzE6_fv9

This is an important article critically looking at the impact of terms we constantly use in describing countries. It reminded me of an article by Tatenda Mashanda on Rethinking the term sub-saharan Africa https://lnkd.in/d3H6sFrX

A very interesting and insightful paper. Khan T, Abimbola S, Kyobutungi C, Pai M. How we classify countries and people–and why it matters. BMJ Glob Health. 2022; 7: e009704. https://lnkd.in/gDvkp5Qb Here is a summary of the article key arguments and emphasizes the importance of language and equity in global health discussions. Key Points: - Vaccine Equity Failure: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted global inequities in vaccine distribution, revealing a lack of solidarity among nations. - Colonial Legacy: Current development efforts often reflect colonial patterns, with resources flowing from wealthier nations to poorer ones, perpetuating a sense of hierarchy. - Terminology Issues: Terms like "low-income" and "Global South" can reinforce negative stereotypes and create a sense of inferiority among nations labeled as such. - Cultural Diversity Ignored: Broad classifications (e.g., BIPOC) overlook the unique histories and cultures of different communities, leading to oversimplification. - Need for Nuanced Language: The article advocates for more precise and respectful language that acknowledges the diversity and individuality of countries and cultures. - Geographical Distinctions: Recognizing distinct geographical and cultural identities can help move away from harmful dichotomies. - Walled World Concept: The idea of a "Walled World" illustrates the divide between wealthy nations and those facing barriers to entry based on economic status. Take-Home Messages: - Global Solidarity: There is a pressing need for equitable engagement among nations to address global health challenges collaboratively. - Reflect on Language: Individuals in global health must critically assess the terminology they use, understanding its implications and striving for more inclusive language. - Acknowledge Diversity: Recognizing the unique identities and contexts of different countries is essential for effective global health strategies. - Challenge Hierarchies: Moving away from hierarchical classifications can foster a more equitable and respectful global health discourse.

The questions asked in the article were on point and how the dichotomous terminologies are used to classify countries 🌐
