Poverty can only be defeated with applied financial literacy. Giving away money to the “needy” is not the answer. Governments, large corporations, and wealthy individuals give away billions of dollars annually. But everywhere you go, you will still see poverty. Instead, it is your responsibility to teach the people within your sphere of influence how to prosper. Once you start doing that, you will find out that most people who claim to be seeking knowledge do not really want to take responsibility for their financial liberation. They really prefer to let sleeping dogs lie. Nevertheless, if you can manage to change a life or two, you would still have made a difference. Be intentional.

What does the journey of financial literacy look like?! Is it linear and straightforward? Is it more complex than that and do the right systems exist to support someone on a journey from food poverty to financial empowerment? 🤔 It was my privilege to bring partners from Food Bank, Money Advice St Neots, eVolve your future, Youth For Christ and some welcome guests in Lee Candler and Craig White together yesterday to continue our work on mapping the user journey for someone becoming financially literate. I have seen first hand the incredible impact MAST have had on supporting local people with millions in debt collectivity, we have an opportunity with the Citizen Hub to work with all of these organisations to find more ways to expand impact collectively at all stages of that journey. To start, here at The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation we don’t use the B word (budget). 👉 Instead, we empower the youth with having a growth mindset and using the terminology of having a cash management system. 👉Additionally, we also can't reduce financial struggles and poverty to not having a cash management system. 👉We know that systemic inequities also factor in. 👉While cash management systems are crucial, many hardworking families can't make ends meet due to low wages, discrimination, and lack of opportunity. 👉Let's equip youth with the cash management skills AND address root causes of income inequality. 👉Financial literacy is one solution. But providing living wages, affordable housing, healthcare, and education are also key. 👉By supporting youth financial literacy AND removing systemic barriers, we can nurture innovation to upgrade our world.
