Meet the new faces of Graphcom! Marianna Fernbaugh, FFFX Project Manager, brings many years of experience in color guard, drum corps, and theater. She has two dogs, Tucker (a beagle coonhound) and Ozzy (a Shih Tzu-Bichon mix), who are comically different in size. She earned her degree in dance and musical theatre from a conservatory program in New York City. Fun fact: Marianna once had a remarkable streak, winning 23 radio contests in one year. Robby Emory, Mailing Helper, is a cat person and recently adopted his third cat in November. He enjoys muscle cars, racing of all kinds, and listening to death metal. Virtual Future of TV Shows The other day I turned on the TV and got hooked on a show. It's not that I was particularly interested in the plot or the intrigue of the contest being shown – I didn't immediately understand what I was watching. I heard a familiar song by "Bon Jovi" but saw some unclear 3D graphics integrated into a real environment. After scrolling through the recordings of the "ALTER EGO" show on YouTube, it took me about three tries to grasp the concept. For those like me who haven't turned on the TV in years, I'm attaching a link to the episode. Briefly: a performer sings a well-known song while hiding under their 3D avatar with an altered voice. The task for the jury is to guess who is singing. https://lnkd.in/gcih3D2F The grumpy old man inside me immediately started grumbling: "Who would watch this? Back in my day..." You, my smart reader-marketers, would quickly counter-argue: "Well, if there are ratings, it means people are watching." Of course, you're right. But let's step away from the ratings and think about why people watch this. I'll start with the grumbling of my alter-ego – the graphics. The technology of transferring human movement to a 3D character was perfected long ago by Cameron in "Avatar." Only in our case, we're getting not Cameron's picture but graphics at the level of early 2000s computer games. And yes, considering the number of episodes of the show and the volume of different performances within each show, making an "Avatar" would take about five years, while these guys likely have a production cycle of a month or so, if not less. So, while one can express dissatisfaction with the graphics, there's really no alternative. And what about the audience? Fans of Red Dead Redemption, Last of Us, and other games with powerful modern graphics, who also keep an eye on the latest from Pixar, are unlikely to get hooked on the graphics of the discussed show. But a viewer less sophisticated in graphics might. Imagine a woman aged 45-55, turns on the TV, and sees something visually appealing set to a familiar song – it captures her attention. In the end, I was actually pleased with the industry's development – just imagine, 3D characters vying for the viewer's attention! To me, it's a great solution, visually interesting for the mass audience, and there's intrigue in the show. Artists navigate cycles of creation and reinvention, often contending with societal stereotypes like the “starving artist.” Administrators, on the other hand, grapple with bureaucracy and the long timelines of institutional change. Yet, finding joy in these paths is part of the journey—a joy that fuels progress and creativity alike. As more musicians of the global majority enter the U.S. arts and culture sector, the question becomes: how can artists, administrators, and organizations support this transformative moment? Progress is happening, but true change demands a collective effort to shift the dominant cultural frameworks. It requires us to believe, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Brené Brown might put it, in the power of interconnected liberation: “There is no us versus them—only us.” Laing acknowledges that tough days are inevitable, but it’s how we respond that truly matters. This post wasn’t a test of LinkedIn algorithms or my audience; I wanted to see if anyone would comment on the craftsmanship of my son’s artwork. Something like, “It doesn’t take 7 hours to make that,” or “Is he in art school?” My son has a disability. He’s smart but processes information differently. While he struggles in language arts and humanities, he shines in the arts, ranking in the top 2% of his peers. He’s self-taught and has a natural gift for comforting others, especially kids. Unfortunately, employers often overlook these talents, even if he applies for assistant roles. I’ve noticed that many recruiters seem uninterested in the stories behind candidates. They focus solely on keywords from job descriptions. Recently, I spoke with a recruiter who admitted he didn’t understand the job posting or my responses but would try to write them down and relay to the hiring manager. It’s no surprise that this “telephone game” led to ghosting. We need to do better at recognizing diverse talents and stories. What are your thoughts?
