Pitching to media is an important part of the everyday job of #CorporateCommunication professionals. Ever wondered why you are not getting the replies you had hoped for? It's because journalists are swampedin pitches! According to Fractl, 47% of journalists receive more than 50 pitches per week. That's 10(!) per work day and even >1 per hour when you consider a 40 hour work week. So, it's crucial to stand out. Read some insights in the post below:
𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗥 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝟭/𝟰) Fractl found that 47% of journalists receive more than 50 pitches per week 👀 So, how do you make your pitch stand out? There are 𝟰 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 that determine whether a journalist will consider your story relevant enough to earn free coverage: 📥 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗜 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹? Your subject line and preview text are the gatekeepers. A strong subject line piques curiosity and prompts action. Aim for a subject line under 6 words. 👀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗜 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴? Your hook is the first section of your email. Dive straight into why your story matters, ideally supported by compelling data. 📤 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲? Once you’ve captured their attention, expand on your story—but remember, this is an email, not a press release. Keep it concise and direct, making it easy for journalists to assess and respond. 🤔 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁? Even a perfectly crafted email won’t succeed if your story isn’t relevant. ALWAYS personalize your outreach. Know the journalist’s focus areas (or beat) and tailor your pitch accordingly. But where do you start with optimizing your media pitching approach? 🤖 Here are some 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 every PR team should track: 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: Measure subject line and preview text effectiveness (= Opened / Delivered). 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: Journalist engagement and leading indicator for Success Rate 👇 (= Replies / Delivered). 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲: Effectiveness of your outreach (News mentions / Delivered). 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗲: Relevance of your exposure to your target audience. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Cost of reaching similar impressions through paid advertising. Marketers have been A/B testing since the 1960s. Now, it's time for PR pros to adopt a more data-driven way of working. Start testing your subject lines, hooks, journalist segmentation, and types of personalization. This will not only make you more effective, but also enables you to report on the impact your PR efforts have on the organization 💪
