✨In a context of challenging energy costs, need for massive investments in grid infrastructure coupled with the #GreenDeal objectives and strong will to decarbonize the steel industry: can Europe's Iron & Steel Industry decarbonize and still survive? It was by addressing the implications that this question has for companies that our CEO Jose Noldin shared his reflection as a panelist alongside Erika Mink (thyssenkrupp Steel Europe) and Stéphane Tondo (ArcelorMittal) during their participation at the #BloombergNEF summit in Munich early June. 😊The answer is yes! Europe's Iron & Steel Industry has an unique opportunity to decarbonize and remain competitive, based on non-pricing criterias. Sustanability, transparence and traceability in the steel value chain are key factors for competitiveness in the future. ♻️Our innovative approach at #GravitHy is to decouple the production of reduced iron from that of steel. By focusing on the upstream phase, namely the production of reduced iron (DRI/HBI) in the right locations, we wish to help steelmakers to accelerate their transition towards green steel production. by providing them with the necessary low carbon raw materials. 💚Thank you to the organizers of Munich's BNEF Summit and to Yuchen (Stella) Tang 唐宇辰 for the great moderation. 👉View the replays: https://lnkd.in/ex6j3xfH

At a public shareholder meeting, Lopez said that customers of the German #steel unit of #Thyssenkrupp would understand that prices of lower #carbonemission steel would be at a premium, particularly once it will be produced with green #hydrogen. “However, also #graysteel will become more expensive with rising carbon costs,” Lopez said. #Platts assessed the current #premium of carbon-accounted #HRC at Eur140/mt Feb. 2., up Eur15/mt day on day. One of the main #costs will be green hydrogen, and the company aims to run its new direct-reduced iron (#DRI) plant, which will replace one #blastfurnace, to be fully run by #greenhydrogen by 2029. Thyssenkrupp will finalize tenders for the supply this year. Lopez added that he expects Thyssenkrupp to form more joint ventures for hydrogen in the years to come. Shareholders of Thyssenkrupp, which owns Germany’s biggest #steelmaker, thyssenkrupp Steel, questioned the availability of #energy for the #decarbonization of the steel operations. “The energy question is the key question,” Lopez said. “That’s why we are favoring a #JV with #EPH.” The full article link is here: https://lnkd.in/d_48iymg

Will German steel giant fire up Russian natural gas again? – Stainless Espresso 27 May 2024 – The takeover of parts of thyssenkrupp Steel Europe by the Czech energy group EPH was only possible last week thanks to the use of the second voting right of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of thyssenkrupp AG. Can Germany even afford to exert such influence on a supposedly systemically important steel company? #stainlesssteel #steel #stainlessespresso #metals #naturalgas #greensteel #europe #germany #steelnews #steelmarket

In a recent article from CleanTechnica, Tina Casey dives into the current status of decarbonization as it relates to steel making. While adoption of green hydrogen is in its early stages, there is hope on the horizon. The article gives special attention to H2 Green Steel's construction of the flagship green steel plant in Boden, Sweden that will have integrated green hydrogen and green iron production. With green hydrogen in the mix, H2 Green Steel estimates that its steel will be produced with 95% lower CO₂ emissions compared to coke-fired blast furnaces. The first post in our series highlighted the role of breakthrough technologies available this decade that can kickstart the green steel transformation. Today, we are looking at two other promising technologies that are still in development but could be potential game-changers once they reach market readiness. These include processes that use direct electrification for primary steel production such as molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) and alkaline electrolysis (AEL-EAF). In our recent analysis, we have assessed potential low-carbon technologies and evaluated parameters such as market readiness, cost and CO2 emission reduction potential. Both technologies, MOE and AEL-EAF, can eliminate almost all emissions (-100%; -99.6% vs the current BF-BOF route) at comparatively lower costs (production cost increase ranging from +23–71% per ton of steel compared to the current conventional steelmaking route) by using clean electricity. However, due to their low technology readiness level, it is still highly uncertain when these technologies will be available. Large-scale commercialisation of these technologies is likely still a decade away and could start between 2035-2045. Direct electrification technologies reduce iron ore to iron via electrochemical processes, using solely electricity. The MOE route operates with molten iron ore at very high temperatures of around 1 600 °C to produce liquid metal, while the AEL-EAF route runs at lower temperatures of around 100 °C to produce solid iron plates which are further processed to steel in electric arc furnaces. Both iron ore electrolysis technologies offer the potential to use very low-grade iron ore feedstocks as well as a simplified industrial value chains involving less upstream and downstream processes. Similarly to other electrolytic processes, these are modular technologies which can be progressively scaled up, thereby providing new possible business cases to the steel industry. You want to explore more potential breakthrough technologies for green steelmaking? Find all technology fact sheets in our recent publication: https://lnkd.in/e8-i-Xcw Next week we will take a closer look at technologies based on carbon, capture and storage (CCS) for primary steelmaking.
