Diving into the technical depths of consistency control within pulp and paper processing plants, we're often confronted with the complexities of MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) systems. Achieving decoupling in such an environment is no small feat, given the intricacies of the process interactions. In our latest venture, we tackled a particularly stubborn MIMO system, crucial for maintaining the consistency of the slurry heading to the washing plant in a Paper and Pulp Plant. The goal was clear: optimize flow and concentration control loops to ensure that the process variables remain within the desired operating range, thus ensuring product quality and process efficiency. To address this, we employed a strategy of intelligent control loop pairing and careful tuning. We fine-tuned each loop to oscillate at different frequencies, a method that allowed us to stabilize the system effectively. This approach was vital in managing the interactions between flow (FIC) and concentration (NIC) control loops, where a strong correlation could lead to undesirable process variations. Our graphs illustrate the before and after - where we've moved from a state of coupled oscillations to one where each loop is distinct and stable, enabling reliable control over the consistency of the pulp slurry.
