Mind the (investment) gap report by EY identifies the investment challenges and three categories of solutions at the project-level, which could help to close the investment gap in the UK and in other markets, while boosting productivity. Some of the key points: * Governments across the West are facing increasing demands on social, economic (rail, road), green, technological and defence infrastructure. * This is creating a growing investment gap, as decades' high inflation, rising cost of capital and expanding government balance sheets, following COVID-19, have made capital projects more expensive while leaving many governments with less money to spend. * In the UK, for example, there are £1.6tn worth of unfunded programmes and projects up to 2040. Only around £900bn of which we estimate will be covered by government funding under the current fiscal outlook, leaving at least a £700bn shortfall. #EnergyTransition #investment #infrastructure #Energy

Some sobering takeaways from the recent EY report – Mind the (Investment) Gap – for global Industrial and Energy businesses. While the report focuses on the UK, the truth is that no Western Government can afford to subsidise the energy transition to the extent that many sector commentators hope. There are significant investment gaps following COVID-19, persistently high inflation, the rising cost of capital, and expanding government balance sheets. In short, we’re facing a world where capital projects cost more, at a time when many governments have less money to spend. It’s important to be realistic. There are solutions available to plug these gaps - alternative financing models, design phase improvements and productivity-enhancing tech such as AI - which the report explores. But we businesses need to be clear on the assumptions we’re making behind any investments related to the energy transition.
