Today is World Refugee Day. Across the globe, one in 69 people are displaced from their homes due to conflict and violence. They leave behind everything they’ve ever known and face continuous uncertainty. Many move into refugee camps, and these temporary shelters can often become long-term or permanent homes. In the midst of this reality, an opportunity exists to connect young people to their futures and transform the pressing circumstances in refugee communities. ⚠️Low- and middle-income countries bear the brunt of the global refugee crisis, hosting 75% of the world's refugees and displaced individuals.⚠️ Among them, five countries shoulder an astonishing 39% of this population. The Least Developed Countries also provide asylum to 21% of the total refugee population. Despite their socio-economic challenges, these nations offer critical sanctuary to millions fleeing conflict, persecution, and natural disasters. Their resilience is indispensable to global humanitarian efforts, yet their limited resources and infrastructure are under immense strain. This disproportionate burden highlights the urgent need for more equitable international support and collaboration, ensuring these countries can continue to offer refuge and maintain stability within their borders. 🇺🇸 Reflections on Democracy and the Importance of Refugee Support 🇺🇸 As someone working in refugee resettlement, I see the immense impact that this work has—not only for those rebuilding their lives here, but also for those of us who have dedicated ourselves to supporting them. This work is a lifeline in more ways than one. Each day, I’m reminded of the resilience and hope that refugees bring, and of the value that we, as a community, find in helping others move forward from hardship. Yet, as elections approach, there is a real concern: what will happen to these services, and will our dedication to supporting vulnerable people be seen as a risk? In a nation that prides itself on democracy and freedom, it’s disheartening to think that our commitment to compassion might be shaken by political shifts. True democracy should mean standing up for each other, ensuring that humanitarian support and social services are upheld as core values, not bargaining chips. Let’s remind ourselves that our work with refugees makes us stronger—as individuals, as communities, and as a country. Supporting people in need should never be in question. This is who we are, and I hope it’s who we will always strive to be. #SupportRefugees #CompassionNotPolitics #StandingTogether #StrongerNation

World Refugee Day is a time to reflect on the global refugee crisis and to reaffirm our commitment to providing a safe haven to those who have been forced to flee their homes. Today, we honor the resilience and contributions of refugees – your resilience and contributions, recognizing that your journey does not end with resettlement, but continues as they rebuild their lives and contribute to their new communities. By the end of this year, the UN Refugee Agency expects there to be more than 130 million forcibly displaced and stateless people around the world. With conflicts around the world continuing to worsen and the rise of anti-immigrant speech, it is even more important that together, we show what it looks like to be there for each other. To welcome one another, and to lean on each other in times of need. How You Can Help: 1. Volunteer: Your time and skills can make a huge difference. Join us in mentoring, supporting youth and families, or helping with job and resume support. 2. Donate: Your generosity helps us provide critical resources like housing, healthcare, education, and emergency assistance. 3. Advocate: Raise your voice for policies that protect and uplift refugees. Share their stories and advocate for their rights. Join us www.lssnca.org. #WorldRefugeeDay #WithRefugees #CommunitySupport #Resilient

What if the most effective solutions to refugee crises came from the refugees themselves? #Refugee-led organizations have the unique advantage of being part of the communities they serve, and we've learned their expertise runs even deeper. ➡ Refugee responses, including policies and programs, are more effective when informed by refugees' real needs and lived experiences. ➡ Refugee leaders are doing some of the most effective work on the front lines of crises. ➡ Refugee voices are crucial for sustainable solutions and integration into host communities. Without them, we risk continuing short-sighted responses that only address immediate needs.
