I spoke about this just yesterday at a security presentation to the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) dealing with event safety & security, but it applies to all industries/professions as well as even your at-home safety. If you didn't call them, you didn't schedule them, you didn't expect them -- you have every right and reason to question their "dropping in." And another little tip, don't just call to verify name-only, ask for a physical description as well.
