🎉 Meet Lewis Williams, one of our incredible #ElevatingTheSafetyNet medical school scholars! 🩺 Lewis is one of eight students awarded a full-ride medical school scholarship, allowing him to chase his dream of becoming a doctor without the burden of debt. It was Lewis’s love for science, learning about the disparities affecting African American communities, and recognizing the healthcare gaps in our system that inspired him to pursue medicine. He is determined to represent and uplift those from underserved communities. This year, four of our L.A. Care Elevating the Safety Net Scholars, including Lewis, will attend Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which recently opened its own independent medical school—thanks in part to a $5 million grant from L.A. Care. 🎓 This initiative is not only working to increase the number of physicians in the healthcare safety net, but it is also striving to increase diversity among the physician workforce in L.A. County. Research shows racial and ethnic diversity in the physician workforce improves outcomes in communities of color. We are proud to support Lewis on his journey to make a difference! 💛 Want to learn more about the eight scholars? Less screen time, more meaningful conversations! 📱🤯 New research published in JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association confirms the impact of what the NY Times calls 'technoference' on toddler-parent interactions. Toddlers with more screen exposure show reduced verbal engagement. The study, led by Mary Brushe at the Telethon Kids Institute, utilized LENA technology. Every minute of screen time mattered, leading to fewer words, vocalizations, and turns in conversation. Improving the quality of care & community services for people living with cognitive disabilities, through the introduction of service-based technology
An incredibly insightful week in Tennessee, where I met with healthcare leaders across a range of hospital organisations, research institutions and trade bodies. My thoughts from the perspective of someone whose primary focus is often on dementia care: 1. It might come as a surprise to my connections from the UK, where the view is often that the US healthcare system is much more advanced and sophisticated, but my general impression is that the UK is actually ahead in terms of its focus and provision for loved ones living with dementia. A lot of the US hospitals I met with seemed a little uncomfortable talking about dementia, and there was a lack of understanding around the terminology between it and its most common form, Alzheimer’s. The phrase ‘silver tsunami’ was mentioned quite a lot, but it was often in the context of an ageing population, without direct reference to dementia care. 2. Where dementia care does appear in the US hospital ecosystem, it seems to fall within a ‘Behavorial Health’ service. However this often comprises a huge range of other conditions. With nearly 13 million Americans expected to develop dementia by 2050 (the figure quoted by Alzheimer's Association®), do US states need to invest more directly in dementia care services? We’ve already seen other regions become alive to this inevitable demand, particularly in Canada, where the Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario recently announced a $6.4 billion investment to create an extra 58,000 beds for long term care patients. 3. To help support with the ‘silver tsunami’ in the US, there seems to be a push for providing more support for care at home. I appreciate that, and it would be the preferred option, but I think it neglects the reality of the strain that is put on families supporting someone with a progressively deteriorating cognitive condition. Supporting someone living with dementia, particularly at the later stages of a loved one’s journey, often requires near 24 hour support. That's very difficult for family members to provide. I’d be keen to hear from others who have experience of dementia care in both the UK and US - perhaps my experience during the past week isn't reflective of the true reality? #uk #us #healthcare #dementia #nhs
What an incredible week! 🤩 From #Nashville to #Memphis, we have met with some of the most influential healthcare leaders and innovators, and it has been an absolute pleasure. Many thanks to Greater Memphis Chamber for the warm welcome and to West Cancer Center & Research Institute for hosting an excellent networking reception. We also had the privilege of meeting with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Regional One Health. Huge thanks to Paul Young, Mayor of Memphis, for his warm hospitality. Tennessee’s welcoming healthcare ecosystem and network of support truly make it a prime destination for UK companies looking to expand in the US. We are excited about the new partnerships and opportunities on the horizon, and we can’t wait to come back! 💪 A special thanks to our fantastic cohort: Deltex Medical, Haigh Engineering Company Ltd, University of Cambridge, Axial3D, Mizaic, mOm Incubators, VitVio, Social-Ability, Mendelian, and Biophonics. It has been a pleasure having you with us! Next stop: Texas for our final visit of the year! We can’t wait to bring this momentum with us to the Lone Star State. Safe travels to everyone, and thanks again for an unforgettable week in Tennessee! ✈️ Paul Benton Sophie Green DAC Beachcroft Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Neville Young Professor Shafi Ahmed Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber #ABHIUSAccelerator #HealthcareInnovation #BusinessGrowth #UKHealthTech
