With great structures comes great responsibility. 👑 And that responsibility is the promise we make to our employees: That their safety our top priority. 🦺 A construction site is a dangerous place, but we do everything in our power to provide our people with the proper training, PPE, hydration, and mental health resources they need to succeed. And in the thick of the summer heat in the South, nothing is more important that that. 🔝 #construction #constructionsafety #concrete #concreteconstruction #concretecontractor

It's Safety Meeting Day! Every month we gather our entire field force, along with estimators, project managers, and the yard and shop teams, to promote specific safety topics, give company updates, and bring our employees together. In addition to quarterly harness inspections today, we focused on mental health in the construction industry, aiming to decrease the stigma, create more conversations, and educate about available resources. Jobsite safety, physical health, and yes - mental health! - are imperative, and these lessons allow for a comprehensive approach to safety ... The Korellis Way!

Construction management consultant and writer. Sharing 30 years of construction management experience.
Mental health is as important as physical health. "The suicide rate for construction is the second highest of all industries: 53 in every 100,000 workers. This is attributable to a number of factors that often compound: financial distress, long working hours, separation from family and substance abuse." "In construction, safety can’t just be about your body: Your mental well-being is as important as your physical health." "In construction, caring about people has to be part of the culture." https://lnkd.in/gqyvrj63 #constructionhealthandsafety #constructionsafety #mentalhealth #constructionmanagement

It’s been equally eye opening and a privilege to hold space for tradies through my event ‘The Shift’. The event gives tradies practical tools to better their wellbeing, creates space for you to talk about what’s really going on, and teaches you how to unpack, communicate and reset. The Shift comes from my personal experience, struggling with my mental health within the industry, but also going to work everyday alongside people I really cared about who were struggling and didn’t have tools or a network to support them. Nothing changes, if nothing changes. I believe we have an opportunity to create real change in this generation of construction workers. Many of the trades I have come through the event are not aware what support or tools are even out there, how to speak up or reach out. If people dont know what they’re looking for, how do they know what step is in the right direction? The lives and wellbeing of our industry is counting on us. By giving people real tools, outlets and resources, we change the narrative. I am passionate about our industry’s future, and that starts with looking after our workers wellbeing today. It’s a privilege to have already connected with so many people in the construction industry. Looking forward to continuing to connect, learn and share with you all.

Sustainability in construction isnt just about the building materials. Many employers offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or counselling services through extended health benefit plans. I wonder how many contractors are including mental health as a topic during morning ‘tool box talks’ and safety meetings. Offering some ideas about these topics, here’s an important segment from CBC and Matt Galloway this week… “Why more construction workers are talking about mental health” BC Building Trades | SkilledTradesBC | ICBA | Independent Contractors and Businesses Association | VRCA - Vancouver Regional Construction Association | BC Construction Safety Alliance
