In New York, A Fiery Insight into the #ArtScene #Curator and Apartment #Gallerist #JeonYoung @ #IronVelvet "Iron hand in a velvet glove" – this phrase encapsulates the concept of resilience wrapped in gentleness. The name 'Iron Velvet' is derived from juxtaposing two contrasting words. The intent was to feature artists who are not mainstream white male artists of New York but those from minority or female groups who possess stories of strong inner fortitude. Within the limits of my mandate, the space aims to encapsulate contemporary art discourse while supporting artists and curators who share my vision. The gallery started in December 2021 in an exceedingly ordinary studio apartment, small enough to include a kitchen in its mere 53 square meters but open entirely as an exhibition space. Until July 2022, we have hosted six site-specific exhibitions, performances, and workshops. While a home may not seem ideal for displaying art due to lighting and circulation considerations, we wanted to turn that around. We didn't wish to follow the grammar of traditional white cube galleries; instead, the space itself becomes an immersive artwork. It has often been likened to a speakeasy for galleries. To those dreaming of entering the New York art market, there is something I'd like to emphasize: with the source of information becoming more diverse and abundant, it is essential to be a person with inner expansiveness. I define this as having a solid core but being soft and flexible on the outside, with a firm center that allows you to expand in any direction. The Iron Velvet apartment gallery, led by curator Jeon Young, was particularly struck by the exhibition of artist #SophieKoe. A conceptual artist who visualizes through her installations how power institutions and mass media dominate our thoughts. She notes that there is a rising number of people who begin to resent institution-led art criticism and trends, bringing forth a time where diverse voices emerge, and works that convey these voices appear. #NewYork, Discovery of Perspective by #HyunYerim.

🚨 UPCOMING EXHIBITION 🚨 We’re incredibly excited to announce The Art of Subversion. This first-of-its-kind exhibition will feature a provocative blend of street art, tattoo-inspired art, and functional glass art. The term ‘subversion’ is defined as “the undermining of the power and authority of an established system or institution.” With that, the goal is to initiate a broader conversation about how artwork is understood in our contemporary world. For decades, street art was seen as no more than vandalism, and only recently has it gained recognition for its cultural value. Similarly, while the traditional medium of tattoo art has been around for centuries, it has only been in the last few years that our society has shaken the stigma associated with the art form. The same cannot exactly be said for functional glass art, more simply known as ‘sm💨king 🅿️ipes’… I mean, I can’t even type the words normally here without getting this post flagged!! As with tattoos, the art of 🅿️ipe making and the medium of glass blowing has a profound history, yet it is an outsider in the art world. We hope this exhibition can help shift our collective perspective of these underrepresented forms of artistic expression. ••• WHEN: Friday, September 13, 5 - 8 PM WHERE: Rehs Contemporary 20 West 55th Street NYC ••• #streetart #tattooart #art #arte #contemporaryart #functionalglass #rehscontemporary #artexhibit #artexhibition #newyorkgallery

Art World insiders make their predictions for 2024. Philip Hoffman, art adviser: I am optimistic about 2024. The Miami art fairs and the November auctions in New York demonstrated that the art market is far more resilient than people had anticipated, particularly when the works on offer are of high quality. In 2024 we will see a continued weeding out in the ultracontemporary category, alongside a deepening of the market in established positions. Lawrence Van Hagen, art adviser and curator: As we enter 2024 against the backdrop of global inflationary concerns and geopolitical unrest, I think we’ll continue to see an ongoing correction in the global art market. This means a general shift away from the experimentalism of yesteryear toward selectivity and regionalism: Galleries may consider doing fewer fairs and may present more curated solo booths when they do take part; a reduction in international travel to art fairs especially as costs rise and sustainability issues loom on the horizon (major fairs have become very regionally focused in any case); collectors are also likely to focus on art fairs and artists in their region. Is this what a more collaborative, community-centered art market could look like? The initiative from galleries Bortolami Gallery, James Cohan Gallery, kaufmann repetto, Anton Kern Gallery, Andrew Kreps Gallery, and kurimanzutto aims to create a shared space for group exhibitions and cultural activities, with the inaugural exhibition to feature works by 80 artists. The way we see it, the joint venture signals a welcome shift towards collaboration and community-building within the art market. The initiative not only breathes new life into a neglected space but also fosters a sense of creative and professional synergy among participating galleries, their staffs, and artists. More of that, please. But, we can't pretend it's all sunshine and rainbows. Amid an art, design, and vacation home boom in the Hudson area, we're curious what steps the galleries might take to ensure the community benefits too, considering the "The Campus'" potential impact on the area's cultural and economic landscape. What do you think?

“Above all, COMMUNITY is essential to ensuring a gallery’s visitorship.” When the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, art galleries—like most businesses—found themselves at a crossroads. Since then, several of the repercussions from lockdowns have dissipated as the art market has returned to its in-person form…. Local art markets are also facing headwinds that can impact any small business in uncertain economic times. Recent gallery closures in New York, such as Denny Gallery or JTT, highlight the challenges faced by galleries post-pandemic. And the broader landscape of engagement with art might be changing, too. Recent data from the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA) revealed that, in 2022, the number of Americans visiting museums and galleries is slowing down, decreasing from 24% in 2017 to 18% in 2022. Given these challenges, galleries have had to adapt in recent years to the changes in foot traffic to brick-and-mortar spaces.” - via Artsy When galleries across the city and country are closing, your support means everything. That means collecting art from the artists and galleries you love!! I hope to see you this Saturday for COMM[UNITY] II: Group Exhibition Opening Reception!
