Actually, it is quite funny that this quote is from Ray Kroc. Ray was certainly not the first. It is often thought that he is the founder of McDonald's. But that is not the case. The McDonald's restaurant already existed when he came in as a seller of milkshake machines. What Ray Kroc was, is the man who made McDonald's big. So yes, he was certainly daring, different and very innovative! As we already said: It helps, but you don't necessarily have to be the first. You do need to know how you can make a difference, what will you do differently or better? How can you grow? #RayKroc #innovation #growth #McDonald's #quote

How did McDonald's succeed? ==================== 84 years ago, last week in 1940, the first McDonald's started as a barbecue joint run by brothers Maurice & Richard. Back then, it had several items in its menu including hot dogs. Their idea was to have customers to drive in their cars, park it in the parking lot, give their order to the waiters who man the parking lot & enjoy the food in the comfort of their cars. While analyzing their sales, the brothers found that over 80% of their sales was hamburgers. And they wanted to maximize this. Inspired by the assembly line concept popularized by Henry Ford, they redesigned their kitchen breaking the hamburger-making into smaller parts using a pre-planned sequence which helped them (a) increase the speed of cooking and (b) reduce manpower. They also drastically reduced the number of items in their menu. When Ray Kroc, a traveling milkshake machine salesman saw this speed and efficiency, he was so impressed that he bought the first McDonald franchise. As the popularity of this increased, Kroc bought the business from Maurice & Richard. Today, 84 years later, McDonald's is a fast-food behemoth. The initial thought of standardizing the food manufacturing process that dramatically increased speed & efficiency is the hallmark idea for McDonald's success - a breakthrough idea that was ahead of its times in the 1940s. This post is not delving into the ill-effects of fast food, but about celebrating innovation. With Gen-AI making huge strides, we are going to witness many more innovative ideas taking centerstage in our lives. #leadership #innovation

🎬 “The Founder” opens in 1954 America with Ray Kroc racking up miles selling milkshake mixers. He has his pitch down cold, but the customers aren’t buying. One day, he stumbles upon a busy burger joint called McDonald's in San Bernardino, California. 🍔 He’s impressed by the turnout, but he’s more taken with the seamless efficiency of McDonald’s Speedee Service System. Everything is timed and noted down to bring the average waiting time of 30 minutes down to 30 seconds. They got the right formula that could be repeated, the exact amount of every ingredient predetermined, and the people working promptly to keep McDonald’s quality constant. 💡 Starting with Ray Kroc’s vision, McDonald's has become a global phenomenon, with the same menu, quality, and experience available worldwide. This concept of fast sharing of the same products—known to all as globalisation—has impacted many other industries, such as snacks, coffee, and fashion. 👉 This is a must-watch film not only for the story behind McDonald’s and McDonaldization, which has affected everyone’s life but also for the “behind the scenes” of a successful business, understanding the logic and sometimes brutality of the “game,” seeing the potential of ideas and taking the opportunity to fulfil them. You could actually change the world as you know it! #SSPVCapital #SundayVesting #YourImpactVenture #TechieCinemaClub

Raymond Albert Kroc (1902-1984). The man who signed up to selling paper cups and milk shake mixers after World War II. That’s until he spotted a diamond in the rough while doing his thing. Well, one day, he bumped into a modest hamburger restaurant owned and run by two brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald in San Bernadino, California. The man was impressed. Being the visionary that he was, Kroc talked the two brothers into franchising their business, and thereon implemented a myriad of innovative business strategies that propelled its growth to levels never imagined by the founders. Still seeing its potential, Kroc went on to purchase McDonald’s from Maurice and Richard McDonald. The rest is history. Today, McDonald's is the world’s largest fast food restaurant chain, present in 100+ countries. Right after Walmart, it’s the world’s second largest private employer and in 2022, the world’s sixth highest in terms of brand value. Ray Kroc, the maverick of fast food, is also known for many legendary quotes. For me, the one that takes the prize (and live by) is this one… “When you’re green, you’re growing. When you’re ripe, you rot.” So folks, it’s time to take inventory of ourselves. What is it that YOU are doing to stay Green? #TeamGreen #NewBeginnings #TradeFinance

McDonald's may be changing the way I do things. And not just because their McPlant is a DREAM 🍔 This weekend, I watched 'Founder', the story of how McDonalds came to be the global mega-business that it is. And I took one key thing away from it... Simplify processes 👏 The key reason that McDonalds became a successful, scaleable business was because the kitchen ran like clockwork. They only offered 3 main products and did them to perfection. There was a system for everything and it was as slick as it could possibly be. 😥 If things are messy, they're only going to get more messy as the business scales, and will lead to failure. Simplify the processes – scale the business. Right? 🤷♀️ #operationalefficiency #founder #scaleup

Work for a king, not for a clown; We're hiring!!! Part 2 #Day6 of #BrandStrategyQuest Let's talk about an #HR concept that was a game-changer in Burger King's #marketing strategy: #Job Poaching. One thing we’ve noticed is how similar all the franchises of any major fast food chain are, whether it's McDonald's 's or Burger King King. This uniformity is designed to make us feel at home no matter where we are. McDonald's has followed this consistent franchise model from the dawn of time. However, this wasn’t always the case for Burger King. In 1977, Burger King made headlines by hiring Donald N. Smith as their new president and #CEO. This was a significant move because Smith had been McDonald's Senior Vice President just three days before accepting the position at Burger King. Smith's transition to Burger King marked the start of a complete restructuring of the company, a plan dramatically named "#OperationPhoenix." Smith swiftly introduced McDonald's successful #franchise #model to Burger King, standardizing operations, menu items, and the overall customer experience. This transformative strategy helped Burger King achieve #greater consistency and competitiveness in the #FastFoodIndustry. Completed 7 out of 30 days. See you tomorrow!!! #BrandStrategyQuest #Marketing #Advertising #BrandStory #BurgerKing #McDonalds #MarketingHistory #AdvertisingStrategy #day7 #BrandRivalry #MarketingInsights #CorporateStrategy #Branding #BusinessStrategy #CreativeMarketing #FastFoodMarketing #OperationPhoenix

Lessons from *The Founder*: The Story Behind McDonald’s I recently watched *The Founder*, a film that delves into the journey of how McDonald's transformed from a small burger joint into a global giant. The narrative centers on Ray Kroc, the man who took a simple concept and turned it into a worldwide phenomenon. While there are definitely some ethical debates surrounding his tactics, the movie provides valuable insights for anyone in business: 1. Think Big: Kroc didn’t just see a burger stand; he saw the potential for a worldwide franchise. 2. Persistence Pays Off: Despite numerous setbacks and rejections, Kroc’s relentless drive eventually led to his success. 3. Focus on the Experience: Kroc recognized that McDonald's wasn’t just about selling food—it was about delivering a consistent, repeatable experience for customers. *The Founder* serves as a powerful reminder that determination, vision, and innovative thinking are often the keys to success. #thefounder #mcd #mcdonalds #hamburgers

For Every Business Person in Any Business - this is a textbook case (amazing that the executives who are paid millions don't get this) of making a move that is NOT a Competitive Advantage and why it fails. By definition, a potential advantage (something that will get customers to go past their competitors and buy from them) must have some runway to it (Durability). What gives a potential advantage durability - one (or more) of just 3 things: 1) Competitors don't have the financial resources to match the move 2) It would take Competitors a while to match (providing a runway of time) 3) Competitors think the move doesn't make sense and therefore don't attempt to copy it McDonald's announces their $5 meal deal. Instantly, virtually every competitor matched or bettered the deal from McDonald's. They have the financial resources, it takes virtually no time to implement and they don't want a competitor to gain an advantage in impulse customer traffic. Fails on every aspect - AND fails to accomplish ANY of the goals of the organization with the exception of reducing margins. But hey.... let's extend it to September even though we insisted to our franchisees that it would only be for a month. Makes sense! McDonald’s new $5 Meal Deal isn’t going as planned (so far ...)
