Thank you to the Green Building Council Nigeria for inviting Richard Walker to speak at your Future Cities Summit | Africa Green Building Summit in Lagos next week, focusing on Building Resilient Futures: Integrating Carbon Neutrality, Circular Economy, and Inclusive Urban Development. In the face of intensifying climate change impacts and growing resource scarcities, resilience is increasingly becoming an essential component of urban planning. Amongst other things, the Summit will be exploring how a city growing as fast as Lagos (with a population growth rate of over 4%) can modernise and develop without causing harm to other industrialised centres. In Africa, the needs of such rapidly expanding cities are coming up against barriers imposed by resource constraints, governance challenges, and socioeconomic challenges. Sustainable urbanism is not just about reducing carbon emissions or implementing green initiatives; it’s about creating inclusive environments that can adapt, survive, and thrive amid an array of challenges. Featuring CEOs from Africa’s 16 national green building councils, delegations from 15 major African cities, as well as over 500 local and international experts and stakeholders, the Summit is a call to action in the face of the urgency and ambition necessary for transforming their cities into sustainable, resilient, and inclusive spaces. We are thrilled to announce that St Audoen’s Park has been shortlisted for the Green Cities Europe Award 2023 – Ireland The redevelopment of St Audoen’s Park (32 Cook St, Dublin) saw a complete redesign and replant of the park grounds as part of Dublin City Council's Greening Strategy. The new park, which opened to the public in 2018, has continued to have a really positive impact on community wellbeing in the area. The redesign has made the park an attractive place to visit, and has seen an increase in social activity, from locally organised events to tourists and visitors enjoying the gardens 💚 Previously, the park had been dominated by grass, heavy tree line and over ground hedging. The redesign has embraced the planting of eight different planting combinations, bulbs, and a wider variety of trees to enhance biodiversity 🐝 Green Cities Europe aims to combat the consequences of climate change and improve living and working conditions by encouraging the inclusion of green spaces in new building projects, and by adding them to existing projects. The Green Cities Europe campaign is being run by Bord Bia - The Irish Food Board in Ireland on behalf of the Irish Hardy Nurserystock Association (IHNSA). This campaign is supported by funding from the European Union. On Friday, I joined a lively virtual chat, 'The Urban Nexus Edition,' hosted by SA Cities Network, where I presented alongside other leaders and eco-experts. Together with other attendees we brainstormed how South African cities can develop in harmony with nature. It was an great experience, with many inspiring ideas and innovative approaches emphasizing how we can create biodiverse cities for everyone. My co-speakers' passion for their work was truly infectious, making it a memorable and thought-provoking event. Background: The SA Cities Network hosts regular "Cities' Lunchtime Chats" to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing among urban professionals and organizations. In this edition, a diverse panel discussed urban development, biodiversity, and ways to ensure a sustainable future for South African cities.
